Field trips are integral part of the curriculum at Orchids The International School – Koparkhairane, a well renowned school around Mahape. As a learning extension to the topic ‘Forests and Environment’, students of grade 4 and 5 were taken to Mahim Nature Park on 1st February, 2016. The guide of the park, Ms. Lekha, took the students for a Nature trail around the park which has a man made forest spread in 24 acres of land. She explained how the land which was a dumping ground was converted into a man made jungle and that it took almost 10 years to grow this forest which has a variety of flora and fauna , which in turn invites birds, butterflies etc. Students saw a variety of species of butterflies such as tiger striped butterfly, Monarch Butterfly, Garden tiger Moth etc. They had a fun time watching and identifying birds like cuckoo and robin and also observed different types of trees and medicinal plants. Students also witnessed the pollution at ‘Mithi river’ which is caused by human activities. It made them think about the need to conserve nature and make this Earth a beautiful place for everyone!
