Bundelkhand, a small hilly town situated between the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh is struck by three consecutive droughts, with bouts of hailstorms and unseasonal rains. Swathes of land lie unused in Bundelkhand as farmers have not sown seeds this season given the absence of irrigation facilities and the crippling water crisis. Some took a chance, tempted by the light showers, only to be faced by huge losses later.
‘Stop Hunger Now’ (a USA based NGO) is driven by the vision of a world without hunger and has been fulfilling its commitment to end hunger across the globe, especially such calamity struck regions, since the past 18 years. Established in 1998, Stop Hunger Now coordinates the distribution of food and other life- saving aid to crisis – burdened areas around the world.
Orchid the International school, Mumbai, along with the support of Mr. Chiresh Sanghvi, the founder of the NGO – Anybody Can Help in association with Stop Hunger Now organized a meal donation event in the school premises. The aim was to help the underprivileged people living in the villages of Bundelkhand as they are going through the unprecedented drought.
Along with monetary donations from students, teachers and staff, students of Grade V helped in the packaging of the meal packets. Each packet consisted of rice, lentils, dehydrated vegetables, and a sachet of vitamin supplements.
Students participated with great enthusiasm and packed 5000 meal packets for the relief fund. The event boosted the morale for students through tangible accomplishments and allowed for diverse groups to build relationships, thus creating a more open flow of communication and coordination.
