“East or west…Our captain is the best”, “Vote for me is vote for change”…The classrooms and the corridors of Orchids, the International School, Thane (OIST) were filled with roaring voices, zeal, enthusiasm and thrill. This excitement was about campaigning of the student council members. The competitive, contesting candidates were super excited to appeal and influence the voters. They convinced the voters at their best by distributing tags, showcasing banners, chanting their slogans in confident voices. The four houses namely, Tulip, Marigold, Daffodils and Carnation had their respective candidates for house captain-ship and assistant house captain-ship. The students’ representatives, who were contesting for the Head boy and Head girl position, delivered their influential speeches and appealed for the votes. Orchids, the International School, Thane (OIST) gave the students the opportunity of contesting for election and voting to get the feel of democracy. Capable, confident candidates promised to be involved in the affairs of the school, to work in partnership with school management, staff and parents for the benefit of the school and their beloved schoolmates. The election for year 2016-2017 was held in the computer lab on 5th July 2016. The electronic set up was developed in Visual Basic. Each member of house from grade III to IX clicked against his/her chosen candidate. The teachers at the election booth acted as the officers and monitored the process. The election procedure was fair and free of hassles. There was a healthy spirit of competition, an urge to get the chance to polish leadership skills. The candidates’ minds were focused on agenda for change to take the school to richer heights. Everyone has crossed their fingers to know the results of voting. All the students showed a high sense of discipline. The school election proved very useful. It infused in the students a sense of responsibility. It prepared them for bigger roles in the civic life of the city as well as of the country at large. The election fever lingers till the results are out and at the same time the school gears itself for upcoming investiture ceremony.
