Science experiments are a perfect way to do this, as they allow children to see the results of their work firsthand. When it comes to primary students, there are a few key science experiments that every child should know. In this blog, we will explore some of those essential and simple science experiments.

These experiments won’t be only for show, as each one is designed to teach a different and important scientific concept. So, without further ado, let’s get started!

Science Experiments every primary student should know

As a primary student, every child should know a few key science experiments. They need to understand the science behind the experiment. Here are the top science experiments at home for primary students.

1) The Disappearing Egg

This is a classic Science experiment that every primary student should know. It teaches the concept of solubility and how different substances can dissolve in water.

  • What you need:
  1.  1 egg
  2. A clear glass
  3.  White vinegar
  4.  Water
  5.  Food coloring (optional)
  • Instructions:

Step 1: Fill the glass with white vinegar until it covers the egg completely.

Step 2: Leave the egg in the vinegar for 24 hours.

Step 3: After 24 hours, remove the egg from the vinegar and rinse it off with water.

Step 4: The egg’s shell should be gone, and the egg should be rubbery.

  • Science behind it

The science behind this experiment for a kid is that the egg’s shell is made up of calcium carbonate. This is why you see bubbles around the egg when it’s first placed in vinegar. When the egg is in vinegar, the acetic acid in the vinegar reacts with the calcium carbonate to form carbon dioxide gas. The carbon dioxide gas escapes from the egg, leaving behind a rubbery egg without a shell.

2) Walking Water

This science experiment is a great way to teach kids about absorption and how different materials can absorb liquids at different rates. You can also try this experiment with other liquids like juice or milk. Just be sure to use a different colour for each liquid so you can easily see what is happening.

  • What you need:
  1. Three clear glasses
  2. Food colouring (red, blue, green)
  3. Paper towels
  4. Water
  • Instructions:

Step 1: Fill one glass with Water and add food colouring to create your desired colour. We used red food colouring.

Step 2: Fill the second glass with Water and add food colouring to create your desired colour. We used blue food colouring.

Step 3: Leave the third glass empty.

Step 4: Cut the paper towel to the same height as the glasses.

Step 5: Place the end of the paper towel in a glass of coloured water.

Step 6: Wait a few minutes and watch as the water is absorbed into the paper towel and travels up to the empty glass.

Step 7: Continue adding Water to the glasses as needed.

  • Science behind it

The Water is moving from an area of high concentration to a low concentration. This is called diffusion. The water molecules are moving from an area where there are a lot of them (the glass of water) to an area where there are not as many (the paper towel).

3) Balloon in a Bottle Science Experiment

It is among the Science experiments for kids where they will use household items such as a water bottle, a balloon, and some tape. It is really easy to set up, and the kids will be amazed by what they see.

  • What you need
  1. One balloon
  2.  One bottle with a small neck
  3.  One bowl of hot Water
  4.  One bowl of cold Water
  5.  Matches or a lighter
  • Instructions:

Step 1: Fill the bottle with hot water from the bowl.

Step 2: Quickly put the balloon over the mouth of the bottle and screw on the cap.

Step 3: Hold the balloon, carefully turn the bottle upside down, and place it into the cold water bowl.

Step 4: The balloon will start inflating as the bottle’s warm air cools and contracts.

Step 5: Once the balloon is fully inflated, remove the bottle from the water and unscrew the cap.

Step 6: Be careful as you light a match or lighter and hold it close to the mouth of the bottle.

Step 7: Watch as the balloon deflates rapidly and blows out the flame!

  • Science behind it

This science experiment for kids is a great way to demonstrate how air pressure works. The hot air inside the bottle expands and exerts more pressure on the walls of the container than the atmospheric pressure outside. When you turn the bottle upside down and place it in cold water, the warm air inside starts to cool and contract. This causes a decrease in pressure, allowing outside air to rush in and fill the space. The sudden influx of air causes the balloon to deflate rapidly.

4) Invisible ink

It is among the fun science experiments for kids that they enjoy. It is a simple Science experiment which requires two things that are easily available at home. These science experiments for kids are safe and easy to do under adult supervision

  • You will need:
  1.  A white piece of paper
  2.  A cotton swab
  3.  Lemon juice
  • Instructions:

Step 1: Dip the cotton swab in lemon juice.

Step 2: Write a message on the paper with the lemon juice.

Step 3: Allow the paper to dry completely.

Step 4: Hold the paper close to a heat source, such as a light bulb or a candle. The words you wrote will appear!

  • Science behind it

This is a great science experiment for kids to learn about chemical reactions and writing secret messages! Lemon juice is an acidic substance, and when it dries, it becomes invisible. However, the acid reacts when you expose it to heat, and the words become visible again. Try different juices to see which works best! You can also use milk or vinegar.
