Chapter 2: Counting in Groups

Look and Guess the Number

Question 1 : Can you guess how many cups?

Answer : Guess and answer. There is 1 cup in the first row, 2 cups in the second row, 3 cups in the third row, and 4 cups in the fourth row.
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10
Therefore, there are 10 cups in total.

Question 2 : Can you guess how many pairs of shoes?

Answer : Guess and answer. One pair of shoes means 2 shoes. There are 3 pairs of shoes in the first row, 3 pairs of shoes in the second row, and 3 pairs of shoes in the fourth row.
3 + 3 + 3 = 9
Therefore, there are 9 pairs of shoes in the given picture.

Question 3 : Look at how different things are kept in groups. Try to guess the total number without counting each thing.

Answer : Guess and answer.
There are 4 groups in the picture. Each group has 3 glasses. Add the number 3 four times to find the total number of glasses.
3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12
There are 12 glasses in total.

Question 4 :

Answer : Guess and answer. There are 5 groups in the picture. Each group has 5 bangles. Add the number 5 five times.
5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 25
There are 25 bangles in total.

Question 5:

â€¦â€¦â€¦ pairs of earrings.

Answer : Two same types of earrings make one pair. Count the total number of pairs of earrings.
There are 12 pairs of earrings in the given picture.

Question 6 : There are three groups of spoons.

How many in each group? â€¦â€¦â€¦

Answer : In each group, 4 spoons are arranged upside and 4 spoons are arranged upside down.
4 + 4 = 8
There are 8 spoons in each group.

Question 7 : There are three groups of spoons.

Guess the total number of spoons. â€¦â€¦â€¦

Answer : Guess and answer. There are 3 groups of spoons and in each group, there are 8 spoons.
Add the number 8 three times.
8 + 8 + 8 = 24
There are 24 spoons in the given picture.

More or Less, Let Us Guess

Question 8 : Ring the correct answer:
Number of teeth in your mouth â€“ More than 40
Less than 40

Answer : Guess and answer. Discuss with your parents and teacher and guess the correct answer. Generally, we have less than 40 teeth.

Question 9 : Number of seeds in an orange â€“
More than 50
Less than 50

Answer : Guess and answer. Discuss with your parents and teacher and guess the correct answer. Generally, an orange has less than 50 seeds.

Question 10 : Number of matchsticks in a matchbox â€“
More than 30 Less than 30

Answer : Guess and answer. Generally, there are more than 30 matchsticks in a matchbox.

Question 11 : Number of pencils in your class â€“
More than 45
Less than 45

Answer : Do it by yourself. With the help of your teacher and friends, count the number of pencils in your classroom. Answers can vary.

Question 12 : Number of spokes in one cycle wheel â€“
More than 20
Less than 20

Answer : Guess and answer. Generally, a cycle wheel has more than 20 spokes.

Puzzling Tail

Question 17 : Chipku rat has a long tail. When he was sleeping, naughty cat thought of tying his tail to the poles. She started from the pole with the biggest number. She moved on to the smaller numbers in order. Help her in tying. But the tail should not cross itself anywhere.

Answer : Find out the biggest number among the given numbers. Draw a line in the correct order that is from the biggest number to the smallest number Here the number 37 is the biggest number. The number that comes just before 37 is the number 36. Draw a line from 37 to 36. In the same way, draw a line which should not cross itself anywhere.

Question 18 : How many are pulling the carrot out?

Answer : Observe the given picture. An old man, the old manâ€™s wife, her granddaughter, a dog, a cat, and a mouse are pulling out the carrot. So, they are 6 in total pulling the carrot out.

Answer : Observe the given picture. An old man is the first one to pull the carrot out.

Question 20 : The cat is _______ in the line.

Answer : Starting from the left side, the cat is fifth in the line.

Question 21 : Who was the fourth one to pull the carrot? ___________

Answer : Starting from the left side, the dog was the fourth one to pull the carrot out.

Question 22 : How many were pulling the carrot before the cat came to help them?

Answer : Before the cat, there was an old man, his wife, his granddaughter, and a dog. So, they were 4 in total before the cat joined them.

Question 23 : Make a cap on the third one in the line.

Answer : From the left side, the granddaughter is the third one in the line. Draw a cap on the granddaughter. The correct answer is:

Question 24: Make a moustache for the sixth one in the line.

Answer : From the left side, the mouse is the sixth one in the line. Draw a moustache for the mouse. The correct answer is:

Question 25: Seema has made a design with different bindis.

Look at the groups and guess the total number of bindis.

Answer : Guess and answer. Count the number of groups and the number of bindis in each group. There are 8 groups of bindis in the picture. In each group there are 10 bindis. Add the number 10 eight times.
10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 80
Therefore, there are 80 bindis in total.

Question 26: Draw more groups to complete 100 bindis. How many more bindis will you have to draw?

Answer : There are 80 bindis in total. To complete 100 bindis, you need to draw
100 â€“ 80 = 20 bindis
Since 10 bindis are in each group, draw 2 groups of 10 bindis.
