Chapter 2: Shapes and Angles

Question 1 : Mohini made this shape.
Is it a closed shape? Does it have 6 sides?

A shape that has the same start and endpoints and no open end is called a closed shape. So, the correct answer is:
Yes, it is a closed shape.
Also, each side of the shape is made by a matchstick. There are six matchsticks used in all. So, the correct answer is:
Yes, it has six sides.

Question 2 : Mohini tried again. This is what she made.
Is it a closed shape with 6 sides? Is it the same as the one made by Rohini? Is there some way to say in what way these shapes are different?

Answer : (i) The second shape made by Mohini also has the same start and endpoints, no open ends, and six sides. So, the correct answer is:
Yes, it is a closed shape with 6 sides.
(ii) No, this is not the same shape as the one made by Rohini.
(iii) These shapes are different because of their angles.

Question 3 : â€˜Look at the angles marked in these shapes. Can you see the difference?

Answer : All three shapes are closed shapes with 6 sides, but the angles are different, so the shapes are different.

Question 4 : Look at the shape and answer.
The angle marked in.................. colour is the biggest angle.

Answer : Observe the angles marked and compare. The angle marked in the black colour is the biggest angle.

Question 5 : Are the angles marked with yellow equal? Are the angles marked with green equal? Are the angles marked with blue equal?

Answer : Observe the angles marked in the same colour and compare.
(i) Yes, the angles marked with yellow are equal..
(ii) Yes, the angles marked with green are equal..
(iii) Yes, the angles marked with blue are equal.

Question 6 : Four different angles are marked in four colours. Can you find other angles which are the same as the one marked in red? Mark them in red, do this for other colours.About how many kilograms do you weigh?

Question 10 : These are two slides in a park. Which slide has a larger angle? Which slide do you think is safer for the little boy? Why?

Answer : (i) The slide to the boy's right has a greater angle.
(ii) The slide on the right is the safer option. Because the slide to the boy's left has a smaller angle, it is steeper than the other.

Question 11: Find out how many angles are there in each of these shapes. Mark them.

Answer : a) 4 angles b) 5 angles c) 6 angles

Question 12: Push each shape downwards with the tip of your finger. Does the angle change when pushed down by the finger? Find out and write your results in the table given.

Answer : Once a triangle is built, its angles cannot be changed, while in other shapes, the angles will change when you push them.

Question 13: There are many times in a day when the hands of a clock make a right angle. Now you draw some more.

Question 14: Write what kind of angle is made by the hands at these times. Also, write the time.

Question 15: Draw the hands of the clock when they make an angle which is less than a right angle. Also, write the time.

Question 16: Can you guess how many degrees is the angle which is;
(i) 1/2 of a right angle?
(ii) 1/3 of a right angle?
(iii) 2 times of a right angle?

(i) A right angle means 90Â°.
Therefore,
1/2 of 90Â° = 1/2 X 90Â° = 45Â°
(ii) A right angle means 90Â°.
Therefore,
1/3 of 90Â° = 1/3 X 90Â° = 30Â°
(iii) A right angle means 90Â°.
Therefore, two times of a right angle
= 2 Ã— 90Â° = 180Â°
