Basal Metabolic Rate
BMR indicates the energy of the human body. Here, students will learn about BMR in full form, BMR Meaning, BMR’s normal range, the BMR chart, and the BMR formula. The above content is also connected with the mathematical operation of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
BMR Full Form:
The complete form of BMR is Basal Metabolic Rate.
What Is BMR?
BMR is the energy expenditure necessary to maintain the essential logical function of the body.
- The activity of the heart.
- Respiration
- Conduction of nerve impulse
- Ion transport across membranes
- Reabsorption in the kidney
BMR is the minimum energy required by the body to maintain life at complete physical and mental rest.
BMR is calculated in a fasting state, taking 8 hours of sleep and 12 hours of fasting.
Calories express BMR values. Every day we need calories to maintain our weight.
BMR is different for males and females with age.
BMR Normal Range:
For a man of average age, the BMR should be around 1697 calories at complete rest in India.
For a woman of average age, the BMR should be around 1,410 calories for the rest of India.
BMR Chart:

BMR Formula
For men:

For women:

Where:
‘W’ is body weight in kg
‘H’ is body height in cm
‘A’ is the age
But in the United States:
For women, the average BMR is 1,493 calories.
For men, the average BMR is 1,662 calories.
Math Operations
Question 1:
Anup Wants to Measure the BMR of His Body. If He Sleeps at the Time 9 PM on Sunday. Then What Will Be His Wake-Up Time?
Answers
We know that BMR is calculated in a fasting state. It is taken 8 hours of sleep.
If he sleeps at 9 PM
Then we add 8 hours with 9 PM
Then we get to 4 AM the following day.
So, Anup woke up at 4 AM on next morning.
Question 2:
Arup Wants to Measure the BMR of His Body. Then When Will He Take His Next Food? If He Eats His Food at the Time 10 PM on Monday.
Answers
We know that BMR is calculated in a fasting state. It is taken 12 hours of fasting
If he sleeps at 10 PM
Then we add 12 hours with 10 PM
Then we get to 8 AM the following day.
So, Arup will take his next food at 8 AM the following day.
Question 3:
Bijoy Lives in the United States, and Her Friend Asim Lives in India. They Both Are of Average Age, Then Find the Difference of BMR in Their Body According to Country.
Answers
We know the BMR should be around 1697 calories at complete rest in India for a man of average age.
But in the United States, for men, the average BMR is 1,662 calories.
So, the difference is
= (1697 – 1662) Calories
= 35 calories
So, the BMR of Asim is 35 calories greater than Bijoy.
Question 4:
Sushmita’s Body Weight Is 35 kg, height is 152cm, and age is 25 Years. He Went to the Doctor to Check the BMR of Her Body. The Doctor Suggests She Increase Her Body BMR. Then Calculate the BMR of Her Body and How Much She Has to Increase.
Answers
Body weight of Sushmita = 35 kg
Height of Sushmita = 152 cm
Age of Sushmita = 25 years
The BMR for women is
BMR = 10 × W + 6.25 × H – 5 × A – 161
BMR of Sushmita is
= 10 × 35 + 6.25 × 152 – 5 × 25 – 161
= 350 + 950 – 125 – 161
= 1300 – 125 – 161
= 1175 – 161
= 1014
So, the BMR of the body of Sushmita is 1014 kcal
But for women, if weight is 35, height is 152, and age is 25, then the BMR
range is
1233 kcal to 1333 kcal.
So, the minimum difference is
= (1233 – 1014) kcal
= 219 kcal
So, Sushmita has to increase the minimum 219 kcal in her body.
Question 5:
Ram and Soma Are Best Friends. Find the BMR of the Body of Ram and Soma and the Difference Between and How Much. The Weight, Height, and Age of Both Friends Are Equal, Weight Is 40 kg, height Is 2m and age Is 45 Years.
Answers
Body weight of Ram = 40 kg
Height of Ram = 2 m
= (2 × 100) cm
= 200 cm
Age of Ram = 45 years
The BMR for men is
BMR = 10 × W + 6.25 × H – 5 × A + 5
BMR of Ram is
= 10 × 40 + 6.25 × 200 – 5 × 45 + 5
= 400 + 1250 – 225 + 5
= 1650 – 225 + 5
= 1425 + 5
= 1430 kcal
Body weight of Soma = 40 kg
Height of Soma = 2 m
= (2 × 100) cm
= 200 cm
Age of Soma = 45 years
The BMR for women is
BMR = 10 × W + 6.25 × H – 5 × A – 161
BMR of Soma is
= 10 × 40 + 6.25 × 200 – 5 × 45 – 161
= 400 + 1250 – 225 – 161
= 1650 – 225 – 161
= 1425 – 161
= 1264 kcal
So, the body BMR of Ram is 1430 kcal, and Soma is 1264 kcal.
The difference between BMR is
= 1430 kcal – 1264 kcal
= 166 kcal
So, the body BMR of Ram is 166 kcal less than Soma’s BMR.
