Measurement of cups and spoons develops knowledge about the weight and capacity of measuring cups and measuring spoons. It also connects with pictographs, addition, and Multiplication of numbers.

Measuring Cups

There are two types of measuring cups.

1. Dry measuring cup-Used to measure many ingredients like flour, sugar, etc. Used to measure many ingredients like flour, sugar, etc.

2. Liquid measuring cups– Used to measure liquid (wet) ingredients like water, milk, oil, etc. Measurement of each cup is given on it.

Measuring Spoons

There are different types of measuring spoons:

1. Teaspoon – Teaspoon measures ingredients required in small amounts like sugar, salt, baking powder, etc. Sometimes, a teaspoon is used for eating food or eating ice cream. A teaspoon is written as – tsp

2. Tablespoon– Tablespoon is a little bigger than the teaspoon. It is used to add spices, sugar, flour, etc.

1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoon
A tablespoon is written as – tbsp


3. Scoop– It is round shape spoon mainly used to serve ice cream.

1. One glass of lemon juice = 1 tbsp sugar.

4 glass of lemon juice = 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4 tbsp sugar


2. One cup of tea = 2 tsp sugar.

3 cups of tea = 2 + 2 + 2 (2 is repeated 3 times)
Repeated addition is Multiplication.
3 cups of tea = 2 × 3 = 6 tsp sugar


3. 5 cups of flour = 1 jar
   4 jars = 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 (Number 5 is repeated 4 times)
   4 jars = 5 × 4 = 20 Cups

   6 cookies = 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 6 cups of sugar
   6 cups of flour are needed to make 6 cookies.
2. 1 cookie = 2 tbsp sugar
   6 cookies = 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2
   6 cookies = 2 × 6 = 12 tbsp sugar
   12 tbsp of sugar is needed to make 6 cookies.
3. Tina used for 1 cookie = 2 tbsp sugar
   1 tbsp (Tablespoon) = 3 tsp (Teaspoon)
   2 tbsp (Tablespoon) = 3 + 3 = 6 Teaspoon
   6 teaspoons of sugar are used for 1 cookie.
4. 1 cookie = 6 tsp sugar
   6 cookies = 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6
   6 cookies = 6 × 6
   6 cookies = 36 teaspoons of sugar

Tina needed 36 tsp of sugar to make 6 cookies.

   Kajal eat = 1 sandwich
   4 is the biggest number. Mihir eats more sandwiches.
3. 1 is the smallest number. Kajal eats the least sandwiches.
4. In 1 sandwich = 4 carrot slices used
   Mihir eats = 4 sandwiches
   In 4 sandwiches = 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 (Repeated addition)
   In 4 sandwiches = 4 × 4 = 16 carrot slices
   Vishal added 16 carrot slices to Mihir’s sandwiches.
5. Ninad eats = 3 sandwiches
   Mihir eats = 4 sandwiches
   Ninad and Mihir eat together = 3 + 4 = 7 sandwiches
6. Vishal made sandwiches = 2 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 12 sandwiches
   Vishal made a total of 12 sandwiches for his friends.
