Pattern in Shapes

We see different patterns in the different things in our day-to-day life.

G1_1_patterns in shape_image of cloths, pavement, gate

We can see patterns in some the historical monuments.

G1_2_Pattern in shapes_colosseum

There are so many things in our surroundings where we see patterns.

Pattern: Arrangement of the shapes, numbers or objects in a particular order.

There are generally 3 types of patterns –

  1. Patterns in shapes/objects
  2. Number patterns
  3. Patterns with alphabets

Here we will learn different Patterns in shapes/objects.

1. Pattern by flipping shapes/objects

We can make patterns by flipping shapes in some particular order.

Example: Extend the sequence.

G1_3_Pattern in shpaes_heart shape

In the above pattern, the heart shape is getting flipped vertically. We need to vertically flip a shape to get the next shape in the pattern.

2. By using shapes or objects in a repeated manner.

In some patterns shapes or objects are repeated in a particular order.

Example 1: Extend the sequence.

G1_4_pattern in Shapes_cups

In the above sequence, first shape is cup, second shape is pot. Again, the third shapes is cup and this pattern is continuously followed.

Example 2: Extend the sequence.

G1_5_Pattern in shapes_circle and square

Shapes getting repeated:

G1_6_Pattern in Shapes_circle and square

In the above sequence, a group of ‘a circle, a square and a line’ are getting repeated continuously.Such types of repeating patterns are called ‘Core patterns.’

So, if we want to extend the above pattern after the last shape means after the square, we draw the line.

3. By increasing/decreasing the number of shapes or objects

In some of the sequences, the number of shapes or objects is increasing continuously throughout the sequence.

Example 1:

Extend the sequence.

G1_7_Pattern in shapes_2

Observe the above sequence carefully and count the circles with the number 2.

1st box – Number of circles = 1

2nd box – Number of circles = 2

3rd box – Number of circles = 3

4th box – Number of circles = 4

5th box – Number of circles = 5

So, in this sequence, the number of circles is getting increased by 1.

Example 2:

Extend the sequence.

G1_8_Pattern in shapes_cookies

In the above sequence, count the number of cookies.

1st box – Number of cookies = 5

2nd box – Number of cookies = 4

4th box – Number of cookies = 2

5th box – Number of cookies = 1

In each box, the number of cookies are decreasing by 1.

So, by removing 1 cookie from the second box, we get 3 cookies.

3rd box – Number of cookies will be = 3

4. By using colour

Extend the sequence.

G1_10_Pattern in shapes_triangles

In this pattern, the blue triangle and red triangle are repeated continuously. And the shape and position of the triangles are fixed.

G1_11_Pattern in shapes_Triangles

To complete this sequence, add the blue triangle after the red triangle and vice versa. So, the completed pattern looks like:

G1_12_Pattern in shapes_Triangles

There are many such types of patterns by using shapes or objects.

To extend the sequence or to complete the sequence we have to identify the pattern of the sequence.
