Shapes
2-Dimensional Shapes for Class 1 Maths
This discussion is about the most common 2-dimensional shapes present in the surroundings. This concept will help them to identify the shapes with their names.
In this learning concept, the student will learn about
- what is a 2-dimensional shape
- 2 and 3-dimensional shapes
- what is circle
- what is a rectangle
- what is square
- What is an oval
Each concept is explained to class 1 maths students with examples, illustrations and a mind map is added at the end to summarize the idea. Two printable worksheets with solutions of 2-D shapes are attached at the end of the page for the students to practice. Download the worksheet to test your knowledge.
Shapes:
Every day we see different shapes around us. Each shape has different dimensions. A shape can be defined as the form of an object or its outline, outer boundary or outer surface.

Based on the dimensions we can classify shapes as:
1.Two-dimensional shapes (2-D shapes)
2.Three-dimensional shapes (3-D shapes)
What Is a 2-Dimensional Shape
- 2-D means ‘two-dimensional’.
- 2-D shapes or Two-dimensional shapes are flat plane figures or a shape that has two dimensions.
- 2-D shapes have no thickness.
- To classify 2-D shapes we look sides and corners of the shapes.
There are various 2-D shapes.
What Is Circle
A circle is a 2-D shape with one curved side and no corners.

Example:
The shapes of the following objects look like a circle.

Semi-circle:
- A 2-D shape that is obtained by dividing a circle into two equal parts.
- Exactly half of a circle.
- A semi-circle has one straight side and one curved side.

Example:
The shapes of the following objects look like a semi-circle.

Oval:
- An oval is a 2-D shape that looks like the outline of an egg.
- An oval is a round shape that is elongated rather than perfectly round, as a circle is.

Example:
The shapes of the following objects look like an oval.

Triangle:
A triangle is a 2-D shape that has 3 sides and 3 corners.

Example:
The shapes of the following objects look like a triangle.

What Is Square
A square is a 2-D shape with 4 sides and 4 corners, and all sides are equal.

Example:
The shapes of the following objects look like a square.

What Is a Rectangle
A rectangle is a 2-D shape with 4 sides and 4 corners, and opposite sides are equal.

Example:
The shapes of the following objects look like a rectangle.

Following are some other types of 2-D shapes.
