Definition
- Describing words describe the noun or pronoun. Describing words are also known as adjectives.
- Describing words tell us how something looks like or how it feels like, its taste, smell, etc.
- These words speak about the various characteristics of the noun.

How to Use a Describing Word in a Sentence?
Most of the describing words can be used before as well as after the noun they modify in the sentence.
Examples:
Sentence 1.1:

In the above sentence, the describing word ‘old’ is placed before the noun ‘man’.
Sentence 1.2:
This man is old.

Sentence 2.1:

In the example given below, the describing word ‘blue’ is placed before the noun ‘sweater’.
Sentence 2.2:

In the example given, the describing word ‘blue’ is placed after the noun ‘sweater’.
What are Various Kinds of Describing Words?
There are various kinds of describing words that explain the shape, size, colour, texture, number, etc., of the noun.
Examples:
- Ravi is a tall boy.
The word ‘tall’ is the describing word, which explains the height of Ravi - Sneha is wearing a pink dress
The word ‘pink’ is the describing word, which explains the colour of the dress.
Common Mistake
Some verbs turn into adjectives after adding prefix -ing and -ed to them. Don’t get confused with those words.
