Concept: Words for Size & Shape

Definition

• An adjective gives us more information about the noun or pronoun.
• Adjectives help us to know what a particular thing or person looks like or the feeling, taste etc.

There are many kinds of adjectives. We will talk about size & shape adjectives.

1. Words for Size

Words refer to the amount of space taken by a particular thing or person. These adjectives describe how large or small a thing or a person is.

Examples:



In the first example, ‘big’ is an adjective that explains the size of the tree.

In the second example, ‘tiny’ is an adjective that explains the size of the ant.

2. Shape Words

A shape is the graphical representation or external boundary of any person or thing. Shape adjectives refer to the external look of a thing or person.

Examples:



In the first example, ‘round’ is an adjective that explains the shape of earth.

In the second example, ‘square’ is an adjective that explains the shape of the room.

Here are some of the most commonly used shape and size adjectives.

Common Mistake

Don’t confuse between shape and size words. This is a common error that students often make.

Examples:

• This is a round table. Round is a shape word.
• This is a small table. Small is a size word.
