Data Handling
Data Handling Introduction for Class 2 Maths
There are many methods to represent data. Here students will learn how to express data in a numerical figure. This type of representation is known as data handling. In this learning concept, students will learn about the introduction of data handling for class 2.
In this learning concept, students will learn
- Defining What are tally marks?
- Listing tally marks table
- Showing Tally marks example
Each concept is explained to class 2 maths students using illustrations, examples, misconceptions, and mind maps.
Students can assess their learning by solving the two printable worksheets at the page’s end.
Download the data handling worksheets for class 2 and check the solutions for the concept of data handling provided
in PDF format.
Before discussing the table, we need to know about the data. The simplest way to collect data is observation. Data is a collection of numbers or measurements of things. Using table data can be represented in an easier way.
- A table is a numerical representation of the data in the form of rows and columns.
How to Make a Table for Data
- First, we need to collect the data and organize it properly before representing it through a table.
- A table consists of multiple numbers of rows and columns.
Examples:
A table is drawn below. - Here the rows are the one that runs horizontally and columns are the one that runs vertically. Together
these rows and columns are called tables.
Example:
- Each box of the table is called a cell.
Example:
- In the first row and first column cell, the name of objects should be written from the data. In the second
column and first-row cell, the number of objects should be written from the data.
Example:
- Always take one row extra from the total number of objects.
Here it is explained with an example.Example:
Sanju bought 78 pencils, 89 pens, 65 chalks, 73 dusters, 48 notebooks, 56 books, and 65 rubbers, for his stationary shop. Make a list of the things he has brought.
Answer:
Here is the list of things Sanju has brought.
Interpretation of data from Table
Here it is explained with an example.
Example:
All the fruits that Ranju has in his basket are arranged in the below table.
Fruits | Numbers |
Apples | 18 |
Pears | 29 |
Oranges | 45 |
Pineapples | 13 |
Watermelons | 8 |
Guavas | 16 |
Grapes | 65 |
From the table answer the below questions.
- How many apples are there in the basket?
- What is the total number of guavas and pineapples in the basket?
- How many more grapes are there in the basket compared to the number of oranges?
Answer:
-
Fruits Numbers Apples 18 Pears 29 Oranges 45 Pineapples 13 Watermelons 8 Guavas 16 Grapes 65 From the table, we can see that there are 18 apples in the basket.
-
Fruits Numbers Apples 18 Pears 29 Oranges 45 Pineapples 13 Watermelons 8 Guavas 16 Grapes 65 There are 13 pineapples and 16 guavas in the basket.
Total 13 + 16 = 29 -
Fruits Numbers Apples 18 Pears 29 Oranges 45 Pineapples 13 Watermelons 8 Guavas 16 Grapes 65 The number of grapes from the table is 65 and the number of oranges is 45.
Difference = 65 – 45 = 20
Hence, there are 20 more grapes than oranges.
Advantages of using Table
- The information can easily find out using the table and it is one of the efficient ways to summarize the given data in columns and rows.
- Table reduces the complexity of data represented in paragraphs and represents the data in an easier format.
What is Tally Mark?
Tally Marks are used to make counting easier and it is a visual representation of data.
- The general way of writing tally marks is as a group of five lines. The first four lines are drawn vertically and the fifth one is drawn diagonally over the four lines.
- The symbol used for the tally mark is ‘
’.
- Grouped data are arranged in a table using tally marks.
In the below table tally marks from 1 to 10 are shown.

Tally Marks Example
Look at the picture and make a tally mark of it.

Answer:

Advantages of Using Tally Mark
- Tally marks are used to make counting easier.
- Tally marks help to make a visual representation of the data.
- Tally marks are also represented in table form.
