Coins and Notes and their Use
- Coins and notes are used for currency in India.
- Coins are used for small amounts of money and notes are used for large amounts.
- In India, the unit used for money is Rupee (denoted by ₹) and Paisa (denoted by p).
- When written in the figure, Rupees and Paisa are separated by ‘.’

Relation Between Rupees and Paisa
- 1 Rupees = 100 Paise
- To convert rupees to paise, multiply rupees by 100.
- To convert paisa to rupees, divide paisa by 100.
Conversion of Rupees to Paisa

Example:
- 25 Rupees = __________Paise
- 300 Paise = ___________Rupees
Answer:
- 25 Rupees = 25 × 100 Paise = 2500 Paise
- 300 Paise = 300
÷
100 = 3 Rupees
Addition and Subtraction of Rupees and Paisa
Steps of Addition:
- Add the paisa. If the result is greater than 100, then subtract 100 from it and carry over 1 to the rupees.
- Add the rupees with carried over 1.
Example:
₹ 25.50 + ₹ 32.25
Answer:

Hence, ₹ 25.50 + ₹ 32. 25 = ₹ 57.75
Steps of subtraction:
- Subtract the paisa.
- Subtract the Rupees.
Example:
₹ 32.50 – ₹ 25.25
Answer:

Hence, ₹ 32.50 – ₹ 25.25 = ₹ 7. 25
Real-life problems related on Rupees and Paisa
Example 1:
A bottle of mango Juice costs ₹ 43.50, and a bottle of apple juice costs ₹ 66. 50. What is the difference between the price of the mango juice and the apple juice?
Answer:
The difference between the price is: ₹ 66.50 – ₹ 43.50 = ₹ 23
Hence, the difference between the price of the mango juice and the apple juice is ₹ 23.
Example 2:
Catherine spends ₹ 80.50 on a rickshaw ride, and ₹ 25.50 on a bus ticket while travelling from her home to the office. How much money did she spend on this trip?
Answer:
To travel to the office Catherine’s spend:
₹ 80.50 + ₹ 25.50 = ₹ 105.100 = ₹ 106 (∴ 100 Paise = 1 Rupee)
Hence, the total money she spends to travel to the office is ₹ 106.
