Maths Roman Numbers for Class 4

Maths roman number is a form to represent the numerical number by letters. Here students will learn how to write a roman number.

How to Write Roman Numbers?

Romans Numerals are the representation of numbers using some symbols. There are seven letters used to write the roman numerals.

Following are the seven letters along with their numerical value:

Roman numbers 1 to 1000

Roman Numbers 1 to 10:

Roman Numbers Rules:

  • Rule 1: The repetition of the letters means addition.

    Roman numbers rules

    Example: III = 1 + 1 + 1 = 3

  • Rule 2: If the letter with small value is written to the right of the letter with large value, then the values are added.

    Example: LI = 50 + 1 = 51

  • Rule 3: If the letter with small value is written to the left of the letter with large value, then the smaller number is subtracted from the largest number.

    Example: IX = 10 – 1 = 9

  • Rule 4: The letter I and X can be repeated only thrice.

    Example: VIIII or XXXX has no meaning.
