Data Handling

Circle Graph

A circle graph is a pictorial representation of data relative to a whole in a circle form.

  • In a circle graph all the portions represent data.
  • Circle graph represents a circle.
  • In a circle graph the circle divides into sectors.
  • Circle graphs represent different types of categories in the graph.
  • In a circle graph we compare data.

Now we show a circle graph of favorite fruit in class 5.

Boy

Here the number represents the number of students

Visualization of the circle graph:

Question:

1) How many students like bananas?

Answer:
49 students like bananas.

Question:

2) How many students like mango?

Answer:
40 students like mango

Question:

3) Which is the least favorite fruit?

Answer:

Apple is the least favorite fruit.

Interpretation of Bar Graph

  • A circle graph is used to visualize information and data.
  • A circle graph is usually used to easily show the results of an investigation in a proportional manner.

Let us take an example to understand better

Example:

Here we show a circle graph of a survey in a school of favorite animals

Animal Number of students
Tiger 15
Lion 65
Deer 20

A circle graph is given below:

Boy

Visualization of the circle graph:

Question:

1) Which is the most popular animal?

Answer:

here lion is the most popular animal.

Question:

2)Write the favorite animal in ascending order?

Answer:

Favorite animals in ascending order are Tiger, Deer, and Lion.
Note: Fractions are also represented by Circle Graph.

Example:

In a bar graph, 32 children voted for their favorite ice cream flavor

Boy

From this circle graph, we can find some information like

Question:

1) How many children like the mango flavor?

Answer:

As ¼ of 32 is 8.
Hence 8 children like the mango flavor.
To make the circle graph we need to find the fraction of each category.
Now the formula to find the fraction is:
Fraction of the category = Value of the category/Total value

Example:

Advantages of Circle Graph

  • Circle graph represents data visually as a fractional part of a whole, which is simpler to understand than the other graph.
  • In a circle graph the presence of effective communication tools makes it simpler than other types of graphs.

Disadvantages of Circle Graph

  • It does not easily reveal exact values in the data set.
  • Many pai charts are needed to show the changes in the data.

Did you know?

The addition of all given fractions always must be 1.

Example:

In a bar graph, 32 children voted for their favorite ice cream flavor

Boy

Here

Boy

So, the addition of all fractions is 1.
