Rounding off decimal

  • The decimal number is the representation of the whole number with the fractional part.
  • Rounding decimal is the way of simplifying decimal to its nearest value.
  • The decimals can be rounded to the nearest tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and also to the nearest whole number.

Rounding decimals to the nearest tenths

  • Observe the digit next to the tenth place, i.e., the digits in the hundredth place.
  • If the digit is less than 5 then keep the tenth digit as it is and remove all the digits after the tenth place.
  • If the digit is 5 or more than 5 then add 1 to the tenth digit and remove all the digits after the tenth place.

Example 1:

Round the decimal 1.234 to the nearest tenths.

Rounding decimals to the nearest hundredths

  • Observe the digit next to the hundredth place, i.e., the digit in the thousandth place.
  • If the digit is less than 5 then keep the hundredth digit as it is and remove all the digits after the hundredth place.
  • If the digit is 5 or more than 5 then add 1 to the hundredth digit and remove all the digits after the hundredth place.

Example 1:

Round the decimal 1.264 to the nearest hundredths.

Rounding decimals to the nearest whole number

  • Observe the digit in the tenth place.
  • If the digit is less than 5 then keep the whole number part as it is and remove all the digits after the decimal point.
  • If the digit is 5 or more than 5 then add 1 to the whole number part and remove all the digits after the decimal point.

Example 1:

Round the decimal 24.134 to the nearest whole number.
