NCERT Solutions for Class 4 Chapter-17 Poem: Going to Buy a Book

The poet narrates her experience of going to buy a book along with her brother. With the money given by their grandfather, both siblings explore the books they would buy at the book shop. Each buys a book of their choice. The poet gets a fat book with many stories, and her brother gets a book with many pictures.

Question 1 :

Why did grandfather give the children money?

Answer :

Grandfather gave money to children to buy books.

Where did they go to buy books?

Answer :

They went to a small bookshop.


Question 3 :

Did the girl buy a picture book?

Answer :

No, the girl didn’t purchase a picture book. Instead, she bought a storybook.

Question 1 :

What are the different kinds of books in this bookshop or in any other bookshop you have seen? Tell the class.

Answer :

There are different types of books available in the bookstore, such as novels, picture books, storybooks, maps, etc.


Question 2 :

Is there a bookshop near your home? If there is, do you like to visit it?

Answer :

Yes, there are many book shops near my house, and I would like to visit the book store once every week or at least once a month.

Question 3 :

Tina goes to her school library to borrow a book. Complete her dialogue with the librarian by using and or or in the blanks.

Question 4 :

What is your favourite book? Write down the name of the book. Then write down the story.

Answer :

My favourite book is called ‘Danny My Favourite Horse’. The story is about a farmer who has a loyal horse named Danny. The farmer and his son were very proud of his horse. All day, the horse helped the farmer with his work. Once the farmer decided to sell Danny, so the farmer and his son took him to the market to sell him off.
They all were walking towards the market, and suddenly the farmer was very tired, so he mounted on the back of the horse along with his son. The horse was too exhausted to carry their weight, so Danny didn’t move a bit. The farmer and his son got down. After walking some miles, the farmer’s son mounted on Danny’s back, and it happily carried him for long, as he was young and light-weighted.
The son was very happy and decided not to sell the horse. But the farmer disagreed with his son, and both then took the horse to the market. When they reached the market, they found out that the market was closed. The farmer was disappointed, but his son and Danny was happy that they were together again. They happily return home.
