Definition :

  • A sentence is a group of words that express a complete thought.
  • The words in a sentence must be written in a meaningful order so that it can convey a meaningful idea.

Examples:

We learn that when a group of words makes a complete thought, we call it a sentence.

Let’s look at a few groups of words.

  • and I did not
  • on the rock an alligator is
  • reading a book I am
  • to take a picture

Can we call them sentences?

No, of course! Because they are not making any sense. The order of words in a sentence is very important.

We must follow the below rules to make a complete sentence:

  1. A sentence must include a person, animal, place, thing, and what they are doing in a sentence.

    Examples:

  2. When we write or use a sentence while we speak, it must express a complete thought. To know whether a sentence is complete or incomplete, we can ask ourselves who or what the sentence is about and what the person or object is doing in the sentence. If we get the answers, the sentence is a complete one.

    Examples:

Question: Who is this sentence about?

    Answer: Sana.

    Question: What is she doing?

Answer: She is riding a bicycle.

  3. A sentence must have words in the proper order to make sense.

    Examples:

    • The lizard is on the wall.
    • on the wall the lizard is.
  4. A sentence must begin with a capital letter and end with a punctuation mark.

    Examples:

    1. They went to a park.
    2. Did you call me yesterday?

Common mistake:

Don’t get confused between a complete sentence and an incomplete sentence.

Examples:

  • I went to the store and bought some veggies.
  • Went to the store and bought some veggies.
