Types of Verbs

Types of Verbs

     a. Action Verb

Action verbs are used to talk about the action performed in the sentence. Such verbs                   express the action an animal, a person or a thing does. This verb is also known as the                 main verb.

       Examples:

    1. The boy sings.
    2. The dog barks.
    3. The snake crawls.

      b. Helping Verb

Helping verbs are those that help the action verb in a sentence. A helping verb is written              just before the action verb. These verbs help the action verb by giving it more meaning.• In            the example below, ‘are’ is the helping verb and ‘cooking’ is the action verb.

Helping verb examples

         Examples:

                a. She is hiding inside the tree house.

                b. In the example above, ‘is’ is the helping verb and ‘hiding’ is the action verb.

   c. Linking Verb

Linking verbs are the ones that talks about its link between the subject and a noun or                   adjective of the sentence rather than expressing an action. These words only link nouns               with adjective or other nouns.

The words are the same as helping verbs but they are not used with action verbs.

      Examples:

    1. The sun is bright.
    2. This stone is very hard.

In the first sentence, ‘sun’ is the subject, ‘is’ is the linking verb, and ‘bright’ is the adjective. The linking verb ‘is’ connects the subject ‘sun’ with the adjective ‘bright’.

In the second sentence, ‘stone’ is the subject, ‘is’ is the linking verb, and ‘hard’ is the adjective. The linking verb ‘is’ connects the subject ‘stone’ with the adjective ‘hard’.

Common Mistake

The subject and verb in a sentence should always be same in number. If the subject of the sentence is in singular number, the verb must be singular too. In the same way, if the subject of the sentence is plural in number, the verb should also be in the plural form. Don’t get confused with this rule.
