Time Related Words for Class 1 English

Words like first, next, then, after that, and finally are called time related words. It allows us to organize our the speech and written language. In English vocabulary, these ‘time related words’ are frequently used while giving directions, instruction, outlining a procedure, or telling stories. This learning concept will show how time words make our writing better.

Definition:

  • There are a few words that give information about time. They allow us to understand the order in which an event takes place.
  • These words help us to tell or write about an event whether it is in the past, present or future.
  • These words bring clarity to our writing or storytelling by helping the readers or listeners to understand the sequence of events, from first to last.

Example:

First, we went to watch a movie. After that, we had dinner at a restaurant. Then, we went to an ice cream parlour. Finally, we came back home.

By using these words, we could create an entire story that a reader can follow from the beginning to the end. The words 'first', 'after that’,'then', and 'finally' help readers to understand the sequence of events. Now we can understand which event took placefirst, second, third,andlast.

Usage of Time Related Words

Look at the list of words that will help you to write or read a story in the proper order.

Words Usage Examples
First We use it to describe the first action one does or anything that takes place before all theother events based on time, order, or importance.

1. First, I will go to the market.

2. Sunny was the first one to win the race.

After that,Then
  • These words are used to talk about the action happening right after the first action.
  • We use these words to show an action that takes place after the second action or the third one.

1. I am studying now. After that, I will take a nap.

2. I woke up. Next, I brushed my teeth. Then, I had my breakfast.

Finally,last To describe the last action we use these words. First, I cleaned my tables. Next, I washed my clothes. Then, I took a bath. Finally, I had my lunch.
Tomorrow Tomorrow means the day after today. We use this word to talk about an action that will happen the very next day. Tomorrow, I will go on a picnic.
Yesterday Yesterday means the day before today. It is used to talk about an action that has already happed. Yesterday, my mother baked a cake for me.

 

Punctuation and Placement for Time Words:

  • These time showing words are always followed by a comma (,).
  • These words usually are placed at the beginning of a sentence.

Example:

First, my mother cooked lunch. Then, she went to the office.

Common mistake:

1. Don’t use ‘tomorrow’ to talk about an action that has already happened before.

    Example:

  • Tomorrow, I will go to a zoo.
  • Tomorrow, I went to a zoo.

2. Don’t use ‘yesterday’ to describe an action that hasn’t taken place.

    Example:

  • Yesterday, my father bought me a dress.
  • Yesterday, my father will buy me a dress.
