Sarojini Naidu was an Indian poet, freedom fighter, and politician. She was born in Hyderabad, India, on February 13, 1879. Naidu had been a very important factor in the Indian independence movement and was greatly concerned about social causes such as women's rights and education. Her persuasiveness in writing and speech earned her the title "Nightingale of India," depicting her contribution to Indian literature and melodious poetry.
Sarojini Naidu was born to a Bengali family in Hyderabad as Sarojini Chattopadhyay. Her father was the scientist-philosopher Aghorenath Chattopadhyay, and her mother was the poetess Barada Sundari Devi. Since her childhood, Naidu showed aptitude for literature at an early, hard-to-conceive age of her life. Bright and talented, this child excelled in academics and showed early passion for writing.
Education brought a sea change in Naidu's life. She mastered several languages like Bengali, Urdu, English, and Persian. At an early age, her literary genius began to sparkle, and at the tender age of 12, she wrote her first poem. Her genius attracted many, including the then-Nizam of Hyderabad, who offered her a scholarship to study abroad.
At the tender age of 16 years, in 1895, Sarojini Naidu left for England to pursue her higher education. First, she joined King's College, London, followed by Girton College, Cambridge. During her stay in England, she came into contact with well-known English poets and writers of the time, and thus her love for poetry was further fostered. Her contact with European literature and culture influenced her writing substantially.
Sarojini Naidu is known for the lyrical beauty and emotional depth of her poetry. Her poetry, which ranges from themes on love and nature to patriotism, often points at a close bondage with Indian culture and tradition. She uses bright imagery and symbolism to express her thoughts and emotions.

Naidu stood as an adamant fighter for the rights of women and also played a key role in mobilizing the women of the country to join the freedom movement. It was during this time, too, that she seriously started writing and developed her distinctive voice as a poet.

A combination of her exposure to European political thought with the profoundly inner sense of Indian nationalism began to nurture the urge within her to fight for India's independence.
