i. What was the Great Stone Face?

ii. What did young Ernest wish when he gazed at it?

Answer :

i. The Great Stone Face was nature's creation. It was formed naturally when some huge rocks compiled on the side of a mountain. The compilation of the stones was such that it resembled a human face when seen from a distance. However, on coming closer, the outline of the face fades into a heap of rocks. It was believed that the Great Stone was the reason behind the fertility of the valley because it kept looking over it.

ii. When young Ernest gazed at the Stone Face, it smiled at him. He wished to talk to the Great Stone Face because he looked very kind and humble. He wanted to hear his voice because he thought that it would be pleasant.

Question 2 :

What was the story attributed to the Stone Face?

Answer :

It was believed that in the future, a child will be born near the Stone Face and his face would resemble that of the Stone Face. This child would grow up to be the greatest person of his era and he would be very kind, noble and humble.

Question 3 :

What gave the people of the valley the idea that the prophecy was about to come true for the first time?

Answer :

A rumour was spread in the valley that a person who looked like the Great Stone Face had arrived finally. Gathergold, a young man had left the valley and he became a wealthy man till the time he had grown old. Now, he has decided to come back to his native place. He had a living resemblance with that of the Great Stone Face. This incident made the people of the valley think that the prophecy was about to come true for the first time.

Question 4 :

i. Did Ernest see in Gathergold the likeness of the Stone Face?

ii. Who did he confide in and how was he proved right?

Answer :

i. Ernest felt the absence of kindness, truthfulness and softness on the face of Gathergold which was clearly visible on the Stone Face. This is why he did not see any likeness of Stone Face in Gathergold.

ii.  Ernest believed in his heart that Gathergold was not the person everyone thought he was. Later on Gathergold died and Ernest was proved to be right. Then, the people also said that there was no likeness between Gathergold and Stone Face.

Question 5 :

 i. What made people believe General Blood-and-Thunder was their man?

ii. Ernest compared the man’s face with the Stone Face. What did he conclude?

Answer :

i. The people believed General Blood-and-Thunder to be their man because he rose to his current position in defence from a soldier. He also wanted to come back to his native valley. The people also found his face resembling that of the Stone Face. Then his friends also confirmed that he had always resembled the Great Stone Face.

ii. When Ernest compared the two faces, he concluded that the General was not the person they were waiting for and the greatest and noblest man of his time is yet to come. He thought so because he did not find any likeness between the two faces. The warmth, kindness and generosity was missing from the man’s face. He felt it in his heart and thus concluded that he wasn’t the right man.

Begin like this : My mother and I were sitting at the door of our cottage. We were looking at the Great Stone Face. I asked her if she had ever seen anyone who looked like the Stone Face.

Then she told me this story.

Answer :

My mother and I were sitting at the door of our cottage. We were looking at the Great Stone Face. I asked her if she had ever seen anyone who looked like the Stone Face. My mom then told me about the prophecy of the Stone Face. She told me that one day a child will be born nearby the Stone Face and s/he would have an exact resemblance to the Stone Face. This child would be the greatest and noblest man of his time. She said that some people seriously believed in the prophecy and some just enjoyed it as a tale. However as a child, this story was really fascinating to me. I took it seriously. When I asked my mother whether she had seen anyone who resembled the Stone Face, she denied. But she said that the whole village was faithful that the prophecy would one day be true and the right man will definitely come.
