The interesting game of chess has found variations in being played through the centuries by almost all persons through all age groups. It's a strategic game that requires interaction, patience, thinking power, and calculations, which means it can be fun and educative for learners. This article will aid children to understand the basics of chess, the chess rules starting with the pieces, their names, to the advanced strategies and even how to participate in tournaments while having ambitions of becoming a chess champion.
Before getting into the ways of playing chess, it is necessary to know the names of the pieces and what they do. Each player begins with 16 pieces, and here is a breakdown of each type:
1. Pawns: This is the smallest and least powerful piece on the board, with every player beginning with eight pawns.
2. Rook: The rook is another set whose number each player possesses in duplicate at the corners of the board.
3. Knight: The knights are placed beside the rook.
4. Bishop: The player has two bishops, and they are placed alongside the knights.
5. Queen: The queen is the most powerful piece, and there is only one.
6. King: The king is the most important and focal piece. The whole game revolves around safeguarding your king from the opponent while attacking to take their king.
Setting up the chess board correctly is the first step in playing the game. Here’s how to do it:
Pawns: Place all your pawns on the second row from your perspective.
Rooks: Place the rooks in the corners.
Knights: Place the knights next to the rooks.
Bishops: Place the bishops next to the knights.
Queen: Place the queen on the square that matches her color (white queen on white, black queen on black).
King: Place the king on the remaining square next to the queen.
Chess is a turn-based game of moving one piece per player per turn. Considering that the kids are familiar with the chess rules, their aim should be to trap the opponent's king. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to start:
1. The Opening Game: White always moves first.
2. Turn-Taking: In a turn, only one piece may be moved.
3. Objective: The goal is to get your opponent's king into checkmate, a position which there is no way out from.
First, one should know the basic chess rules before participating in this game. Here are the easiest manners in which a child can be introduced to chess:
1. Moving Pieces: Each chess piece moves differently.
2. Piece Capture: Every time one of your pieces moves into the opponent's piece square, that piece is captured.
3. Check and Checkmate: The state when the king is under threat of capture is called "in check." If the king is in a position to be captured and there is no way for the king to move out of capture, it is checkmate and ends the game.
4. Stalemate: If any player has no legal moves left to do and his king is not under check, the result is a draw called stalemate.
5. En Passant: This is that special pawn capture which occurs when a pawn moves two squares forward from its starting position, landing beside an opponent's pawn. That opposing pawn can capture it as if it had moved only one square.
Chess rules have defined the movement of each of the chess pieces. All the pieces move differently. Here's a close see at how each piece moves and captures:
1. Pawn: It can move forward one square but can capture diagonally. On their first move, it can move forward two squares but Pawns can never move backward
2. Rook: It can move horizontally or vertically on any number of squares. It can capture any piece that comes its way but can't jump over other pieces.
3. Knight: It moves in an "L" shape, i.e. two squares in one direction and then turn one square perpendicular. It is the only piece that may jump over other pieces.
4. Bishop: It moves diagonally any number of squares. It cannot pass through other pieces to move.
5. Queen: It is considered as the most powerful piece that combines the moves of a rook and a bishop. It moves horizontally, vertically, or diagonally any number of squares. Though powerful, it cannot jump over other pieces.
6. King: It moves one square in any direction. The most important piece but not very powerful. It cannot move into a square which is under threat by any opposing piece.
As per the chess rules, apart from the basic moves, there are some special moves which bring additional avenues of strategy into the game of chess:
This move includes the king and one of the rooks.
The king shall move two squares towards any of the rooks, with the latter moving to the square next to the king.
Castling is possible only if the king is not under check nor has any of the kings or rooks moved previously. There must be no pieces in between.
If a pawn reaches the opposite side of a board, a player may promote it into another piece of choice. Normally, this turns out to be a queen.
So, the player is now having an additional piece which is powerful.
