Introduction

STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. It also represents the four main branches of study within these subjects. So according to this logic, you can’t do anything in life without it being related to science at some point or another! That said, there are many fun ways that you can teach children about science with kids’ crafts that will be just as much fun as drawing pictures on your walls using your crayons. There are various STEM activities for kids that will foster curiosity in a child.

7 STEM activities for kids

Here is the list of 7 STEM activities for kids you can try out.

3. Kitchen Science Projects for Kids

Science experiments done in the kitchen are practical, easy to do, and fun for kids because they see how science works in the real world helping them learn STEM concepts easily. There are lots of great STEM activities for kids that they can do right in your kitchen or dining which will foster curiosity in a child.

4. DIY STEM Activities for Kids

When teaching children STEM skills it makes sense to get them started early so they have years of learning ahead of them before reaching college or university. Here are some unique ideas you can do with your preschooler right at home without spending too much money on materials. Your child can learn STEM concepts from a very early age, it’s never too early to get your child excited about STEM.

5. Easy science projects for STEM learning

One of the easy science projects you can try for STEM learning is making worms disco. Use milk cartons or paper cups to make two identical wigglers, then cut off the top of each cup and a hot glue gun them together to make a worm disco ball (and there you have your STEM project right there). Make sure your child understands that the worms will not be harmed in any way by this experiment. This is one of the fun STEM activities for kids that will foster curiosity in a child.

6. Introduce them to stop-motion animation

Another STEM activity that will foster curiosity in a child is to introduce them to stop-motion animation. You can use LEGO mini-figures or action figures and cover them with any material of your choice, such as aluminium foil. Make sure you do not roll the fabric too tight to break easily. Using these STEM activities will teach your child a lot.

7. STEM learning using paper rockets

You can also try STEM learning using paper rockets and launchers. You can use straws and index cards to cut out a launcher; then attach an index card on top of the straw to make some fins for your “rocket”. Cut three inches off the bottom part of the straw (so you end up with a four-inch-long rocket tube) and slide some tissue into one end (this forms as a base when you put the rocket in a launcher). Get some tissue and cut a square around half an inch bigger than your straws. Fold it accordion style to make a multi-ply piece of tissue about two inches long. Roll up this tube tightly with the nose pointed down until it’s round and can stand freely on its own. Now push the rocket into the straw (this is why you made the four-inch one; otherwise, your child will get poked by all those sharp edges; same goes for folding the fins, if they are too big, they could poke him or her) and use tape to secure them together.

Conclusion

Introducing your child to STEM at an early age will help them a lot in their learning. With these STEM activities for kids, you can enhance their creativity and problem-solving skills. Many STEM activities will help your child understand STEM better, but you have to encourage them to do it. It is recommended to choose STEM activities for kids that are appropriate for your child’s age.
