From where do the people in Madho’s village fetch water for drinking?
The villagers from Madho’s village have to walk a long distance to reach a pond from where they fetch water. Sometimes water trains come into the village, for which the people wait for a long time. Some villagers collect rainwater by specially built tanks.
Who fetches water in Madho’s house?
Madho’s mother and sister travel a long distance to fetch water from a pond. Whenever the water train comes into the village, his father takes his camel-cart to bring water.
Water collected in the tanka is mostly used for drinking. Why?
A tanka is properly covered with a lid. Rainwater flows through a pipe into the tanka. A sieve is attached to the mouth of the pipe so that no dirt gets into the tanka. Due to this filtration process, clean water is obtained, which is used for drinking.
Can there be any other method of collecting water?
Yes, there are other methods for collecting water, like, plastic or cement tanks, buckets, drums, digging trenches on the hilly slopes, etc.

There are some ways by which we can save water—
- Avoid water leakage from the taps.
- Check if someone is keeping the tap open.
- Request our elders to practice rainwater harvesting.
- Avoid extra use of water while brushing teeth, bathing or washing clothes and utensils.
- Use a bucket to take a bath instead of using a shower.
- Use wastewater that comes from washing the clothes to clean the toilets.
- Unused water can be used for gardening.
Have you seen water flowing unnecessarily in your home, school or any other place? Where?
No, I have not seen water flow unnecessarily at home or in my school because we have been taught that water is precious and must not waste it. But once, I had seen a man keep the tap running in a restaurant. I politely asked him to turn off the tap.

Can we use the water that has been used for one purpose for something else?
The woman in the above picture uses her bathing water to clean the cow. Similarly, we can re-use the water which has been used for one purpose for some other activities. For example, water collected from washing clothes can be used for toilet cleaning, and water collected while cleaning vegetables can be used in the garden to water the plants.
