What is Capitalization?

Capitalization is when you write the first letter in a word in the capital letter.

Amrita is holding the capital letter A in one hand and the small letter an in another hand. Most of the time, we use small letters in a sentence. Sometimes, we use capital letters at the beginning of a word.
In this lesson, we are going to look at some of the most important capitalization rules, so you can understand when to use capital letters at the beginning of a word and when to leave letters in the lower case.

Capitalization Rules:

1. The first letter of the first word in a sentence should be written in capitals.

   Example:

   

   We are travelling on a bus.

2. The name of a person should be written with the first letter in capital, and the rest of the word can be written in small letters.

   Example:

   
3. Names of places, including cities, states, countries, and continents should be capitalized.

   1. I will travel to London for the first time.
   2. Rajasthan is the largest state in India.
   3. Kolkata is the city located in West Bengal.
   4. Asia is the largest continent on Earth.
4. Always capitalize the names of monuments, bridges, buildings, and tunnels. If the name has two words in it, then capitalize both words.

   1. Taj Mahal is the seventh wonder of the world.
   2. The Statue of Liberty is situated in New York.
   3. I took a photo in front of Howrah Bridge.
   4. The Gateway of India is one of India’s most unique landmarks.
5. Always capitalize the names of water bodies, mountains, and celestial objects.

   1. The Ganga river is called the Mother River by people in India.
   2. The rings of Saturn are made out of chunks of ice and rock.
   3. The world’s tallest mountain chain is found in the Himalayas.
   4. We went boating in Dal Lake.
   
6. The names of all the months in the year should be capitalized.

7. Days of the week should be capitalized. Wherever it is placed in the sentence, it is capitalized.
