Let’s look at a paragraph written on ‘My favourite festival’.
Diwali is the widely celebrated festival of the year. Every year it falls in the month of November. It is celebrated as the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. The festival of light is symbolic because, on this day, Lord Rama returned to his hometown Ayodhya along with his wife Sita and brother Laxman from 14 years of exile after defeating Ravana.

a) What is a topic sentence?
The topic sentence is the first sentence of a paragraph. It is also called an introduction sentence of a paragraph. It explains the basic idea of each paragraph and shows how it gives an overview of the entire topic. All the following sentences presented in the paragraphs must be relevant to it.
b) Supporting Details
The supporting sentences talk more about the topic sentence by explaining, describing, and expanding the main idea. It includes examples, facts, the writer’s own experience, and opinions regarding the topic.
c) Concluding Sentence:
In this part of the paragraph, the writer talks about the final statement about the topic that sums up the major points of the paragraph by revisiting all the ideas given in it.

The descriptive paragraph describes a person, place, thing, theme or idea to the readers. This paragraph is often used to give details about something.
This paragraph describes something and gives instructions. It explains a process and makes the reader go through a process step by step. It usually requires research though the writer can depend on his or her own experience.
In this paragraph, the writer offers his or her own opinion or point of view on the topic. It requires a great amount of research and facts.
