Vocabulary : Make New Words for class 2 English

The students will learn several 3 letter words in English which will help enhance their vocabulary skills. They will learn to make new words from a single word. In this concept, there is also a list of 4 letter words in English to understand the concept better.

Definition

  • Vocabulary is all about words. It refers to the words in a language or a special set of words you are trying to learn.
  • Vocabulary is used to speak to one another.
  • Developing a child’s vocabulary helps a child as it is a useful tool used for communication in their daily lives.
  1. Three Letter Words in English and Four Letter Words
    • First, learn the spelling and meaning of three to four-letter words.
    • Each word is made up of vowels and consonants. Vowels are letters like a, e, i , o, and u & consonants are letters like b, c, d, f, g, etc.

In the table below, there are four-letter words and less than four-letter words that are a part of the English language and are used in day-to-day conversations.

i) Three to Four Letter Words

ii) Four to Five Letter Words

  1. After learning the two to three-letter words, we will take a look at four to five-letter words. Most of these words start with a consonant. They usually have at least one vowel.
  2. Usually, three to four-letter words don’t have more than two vowels

How to Make a New Word?

Mostly, words usually start with consonants, so always separate the vowels and consonants from jumbled words.

Combine a vowel and a consonant to make a word.

Examples:

From the word ‘HAPPY’, there are two words that can be made.

  • PAY
  • HAY

Common Mistake

  1. There are many words that have similar spellings and pronunciation but are used in a different contexts. Always use these words in the right place.
Examples:
    1. Two, too, and to

      • Don’t use ‘two’ in place of ‘to’ in a sentence.

  I have to wait for him.

    I have two wait for him.

  1. While making new words from one word, make sure to create words that have proper meanings. Avoid making the mistake of creating words that don’t hold any meaning.
