What is an Occupation

A work, task or business that a person does daily to earn money is called their occupation. A person can pick an occupation as per their interests, skills, education and experience. Although some occupations need us to gain a particular type of education, training or qualification while others require practical skills that we can learn through training or experience. Some of the common examples of occupations are teachers, doctors, lawyers, nurses, farmers and more. 

Types of Occupations

Based on the type of work different people do their occupations can be categorized into primary, secondary and tertiary occupations: 

  1. Primary Occupations: The occupations that use natural resources directly such as growing food, extracting minerals and supplying raw material for making other products. For example, farming, fishing, mining and forestry.
  2. Secondary Occupation: Occupations that work on creating goods from raw material such as chefs, bakers, weavers and carpenters.
  3. Tertiary Occupations: Occupations that provide services rather than making goods are called tertiary occupations. For example, teachers, shopkeepers, nurses and drivers.

  • Teacher: Students in school, colleges and other educational institutions learn from their teachers and become doctors, engineers, lawyers and more. A teacher helps children learn and grow.
  • Doctor: Treats sick people in hospitals and private clinics. They help people feel better when they are unwell and serve the society in many ways.
  • Pilot: Flies aeroplanes in the sky and helps people go from one place to another. 
  • Nurse: By taking care of sick people in hospitals nurses help doctors in treating patients.
  • Policeman: Protects people and maintains law and order of a place.
  • Engineer: Build and design machines and various structures including roads and bridges. 
  • Chef: A chef is someone who cooks yummy food for everyone in famous restaurants and hotels.
  • Baker: They bake yummy treats including cakes, cookies, tarts, cup cakes, pastries and more.
  • Farmer: Usually a farmer cultivates land, grows food and manages livestock in the fields. 
  • Firefighter: Trained in public safety, a firefighter helps rescue people by putting out fire with the help of water hoes. They come in firetrucks that have all the equipment to rescue people in emergencies.
  • Bus Driver: Just like our school bus driver takes us to school everyday, the bus drivers help passengers travel from one place to another using public transportation..
  • Electrician: Fix broken home appliances and electrical systems at home.
  • Postman: A postman brings letters and packages to our home.
  • Astronaut: Travel into space in spaceships and collect information about the space.
