In this blog, you will learn:
You’ve been using addition in your earlier grades, but in Grade 5, it gets more fun. Now, you’ll add bigger numbers, decimals, and solve real-life problems like shopping bills, distances, and money. Let’s learn some smart tricks to master addition.
Before that a basic on addition; it is used to find the total or the sum.
Example:
If you have three apples and your friend offers you 2 more apples, you can add to find your total.
3 apples + 2 apples = 5 apples
So, addition is an easy way to find the total of a group of objects, things, or numbers by adding them together.
Important terms:
Addends: The numbers we upload together.
Example: In 4 + 3 = 7: the numbers 4 and 3 are addends.
Sum: The solution we get after adding.
Like these, addition helps us in many ways in real life. We use it to count money, find test scores, and calculate our toys.
Step 1: Arrange the addends in columns.
Step 2: Start adding the numbers from the right. Start with the digits in the ones place and gradually move towards the left.
Step 3: Regroup wherever necessary.
Step 4: Write the final answer.
Example: 36789 + 1564
3 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 |
+ 1 | 5 | 6 | 4 | |
3 | 8 | 3 | 5 | 3 |
The sum of 36789 and 1564 is 38353.
Practice Questions:
(i) 2366 + 465
(ii) 167789 + 1520
(iii) 30590 + 6598
(iv) 340672 + 82599
(v) 458716 + 23490
Example: Add 23.78 and 6.927.
Solution: Start by placing the numbers from the right side.

Thus, 23.78 + 6.927 = 30.707.
Practice Questions:
i) 56.98 + 34.98
ii) 781.8 + 54.67
iii) 6756.89 + 456.32
iv) 8907.988 + 3459.76
v) 453896.88 + 56439.8
Similar to addition, a quick recap to subtraction also. Subtraction means taking one amount away from another. If you have 100, and you remove 40, you can always subtract to tell how much I have left. For instance, say we have subtract 230 from 500.
Example:
A farmer had 7250 apples. He sold 3145 apples. How many apples are left?
Answer: 7250 - 3145 = 4105
Important terms:
Example: 7 - 2 = 5;
In 7 - 2 = 5: the number 7 is minuend and 2 is called subtrahend.
5 is the difference.
Step 1: Write the minuend on the top of the subtrahend.
Step 2: Start subtracting the numbers from the ones place.
Step 3: Regroup if required.
Step 4: Write the final answer.
Example: Subtract 2435 from 6723.
Solution: 6723 - 2435 = 4288
6 | 7 | 2 | 3 |
- 2 | 4 | 3 | 5 |
4 | 2 | 8 | 8 |
Practice Questions:
(i) 584 - 247
(ii) 923 - 456
(iii) 1205 - 798
(iv) 763 - 489
Let's take an example of adding two decimal numbers
423.45 - 47.68
Place the numbers in place value.
4 | 2 | 3 | . | 4 | 5 |
- 4 | 7 | . | 6 | 8 | |
3 | 7 | 5 | . | 7 | 7 |
The difference is 375.77
Thus, 423.45 - 47.68 = 375.77
Word Problem:
Question: Neha has Rs. 850. She spends Rs. 275 on groceries and Rs. 155 for transportation. Find out how much she has left.
Solution: Total spending on groceries and transport is Rs. 275 + Rs. 155. That equals 430.
She has Rs. 850 - Rs. 430 = Rs. 420.
So, Neha has Rs. 420 left.
Addition and subtraction have a close connection. You can view subtraction as addition in reverse. For instance, if one states that 10 plus 5 equals 15, then one could follow it with 15 minus 5 equals 10.
This realisation of their relationship helps you get faster at problem-solving. With some practice in adding and subtracting, you will tackle larger numbers. You'll work with four-digit or even five-digit ones.
6-Digit Addition
When including 6-digit numbers, you follow the equal steps as with smaller numbers. Sort the numbers by value: ones, tens, masses, lots, ten hundreds, and hundred hundreds. Read from the right flank, and travel left. When the sum of a column is 10 or more, you carry over the next column.
Example: 284861 + 145690
2 + 1 = 3 | 8 + 1 = 9 | 4 + 1 = 5 | 8 + 1 = 9 | 6 | 1 |
+ 1 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 9 | 0 |
4 | 3 | 0 | 5 | 5 | 1 |
The final answer is 430551.
Practice Questions:
i) 359124 + 237176
ii) 791286 + 446576
iii) 402345 + 210876
iv) 768324 + 791234
v) 424798 + 212572
6-Digit Subtraction
In 6-digit subtraction, you furthermore might line up the numbers through place price. If the top value is less than the lowest in any column, borrow from the next better vicinity fee.
Let's take the example of 657431 - 394776
6 - 1 = 5 | 5 + 10 = 15 | 7 - 1 = 6 | 4 - 1 = 3 | 3 - 1 = 2 | 1 + 10 = 11 |
- 3 | 9 | 4 | 7 | 7 | 6 |
2 | 6 | 2 | 6 | 5 | 5 |
The answer is 262655.

iii) 654321 - 432198
iv) 800000 - 324674
v) 674234 - 599090
Addition and subtraction have a close connection. You can view subtraction as addition in reverse. For instance, if one states that 4 plus 3 equals 7, then one could follow it with 7 minus 3 equals 4.
This realisation of their relationship helps you get faster at problem-solving. With some practice in adding and subtracting, you will tackle larger numbers. You'll work with four-digit or even five-digit ones.
Question: There were a total of 1245 apples in stock in the store. The seller sold 875 apples in the morning. They received a shipment of 320 apples in the afternoon. What is the final fruit stock after those two operations?
