Addition

In this chapter, the students will learn about class 2 addition. They will learn about the term’s addends, addition sign, and sum.

In this learning concept, the students will learn:

  • Horizontal Addition
  • Vertical Addition

Each concept is explained to class 2 maths students using illustrations, examples, misconceptions, and mind maps. You can assess your learning by solving the two printable worksheets at the pages' end.
Download the addition worksheet for class 2 and check the solutions for the concept of addition provided in PDF format.

Addition- To find a total or count the objects together we use addition.

  1. Parts of Addition

    • Addends: The numbers we add
    • + (Plus): Addition sign
    • Sum: Total after doing addition

    Example:

We have learned the addition of one-digit numbers. Now we will learn the addition of the two-digits numbers.

    Example:

There are 12 matchsticks and we need to add 22 matchsticks to it.

Count the total number of matchsticks.

A bundle of ten matchsticks represents the 1 ten and two individual matchsticks represent 2 ones. It makes number 12.

Similarly, two bundles of ten matchsticks represent the 2 tens and two individual matchsticks represent 2 ones. It makes number 22.

Now, we want to count all these matchsticks together.

Put all the bundles together and individual matchsticks together.

Three bundles of ten matchsticks represent 3 tens and four individual matchsticks represent 4 ones. It makes number 34.

So, the sum of the numbers 12 and 22 is 34:

    12 + 22 = 34

    Note:

    • Here we add the numbers at the ones place and the numbers at tens place separately.
    • While doing addition always start by adding ones place numbers.(From right to left)
  2. Representation of the Addition

    • Horizontal Addition

Step 1: Write the numbers horizontally connected with plus sign.

Step 2: Add the ones place numbers.

Step 3: Add the tens place numbers.

      Example:

Step 1: Write the numbers horizontally.

Step 2: Add the ones place numbers.

Here, the first addend at ones place is the number 4, and the second addend at ones place is 5. Add the 4 and 5.

Step 3: Add the tens place numbers.

Here, the first addend at tens place is 2, and the second addend at tens place is 7. Add 2 and 7.

      So, we get

    • Vertical Addition

(To do vertical addition we use place value tables.)

Step 1: Write the numbers in place value tables correctly.

Step 2: Add the ones place numbers.

Step 3: Addition the tens place numbers.

      Example:

Step 1: Write the numbers in place value tables correctly. On the write the representation for the numbers is shown.

Step 2: Add the numbers at ones place.

Step 3: Add the numbers at tens place.

      So, we get:

  3. Addition with Carryover

    Example:

Step 1: Write the numbers in place value tables correctly.

Step 2: Add the numbers at ones place.

When we add 5 and 7, we get 12. But we can’t write the two-digit number at the ones place.

Step 3: Carry over the tens place number of the sum to the next place that is tens place.

Out of 12 ones, we can make a group of 10 flowers which is 1 ten. So, 2 flowers are remaining which indicates 2 ones.

Step 4: Add the numbers at tens place. (Including the carry over number also)

    So, we get

Misconception in Addition:

  • Write the one-digit numbers at Ones place always.
