Few elements of English grammar cause as much consistent confusion as articles. The words ‘a’, ‘an’ and ‘the’ look simple on the surface: there are only three of them. But the rules governing their use are numerous, context-dependent and full of exceptions. Articles exercises are the most effective way to internalise these rules. Reading about articles builds understanding. Doing articles exercises with answers builds the automatic, confident accuracy that correct article use in real writing and speech requires.
This page provides the most comprehensive collection of articles exercises available, covering every rule and every type of article use from beginner to advanced level.
Articles are a type of determiner placed before nouns to indicate whether the noun refers to something specific or something non-specific. They are among the most common words in English and appear before almost every countable noun in a sentence.

Non-specific singular countable nouns (consonant sound) |

Indefinite |
Non-specific singular countable nouns (vowel sound) |
|
the |
Specific nouns already known or identified |
The indefinite articles ‘a’ and ‘an’ are used before singular countable nouns when the noun is not specific: when it refers to any one of a general category rather than a particular known item.
Indefinite articles are also used when mentioning something for the first time.
The definite article ‘the’ is used before nouns when the noun refers to something specific and identifiable: something the speaker and listener both know or can identify.
In many situations, no article is used at all. This is called the zero article. It occurs with plural nouns used in a general sense, uncountable nouns used generally, proper nouns, and certain fixed expressions.
Use ‘a’ before any singular countable noun that begins with a consonant sound, regardless of the letter it begins with.
The choice between ‘a’ and ‘an’ depends on the sound of the following word, not its spelling.
Use ‘a’ when mentioning something for the first time in a conversation or piece of writing.
Use ‘a’ (or ‘an’) when describing someone's occupation.
‘A’ can be used to mean ‘one’ in certain contexts.
Use ‘an’ before any word that begins with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u sounds), regardless of the letter the word actually starts with.
When a word begins with a silent ‘h’, the first sound is a vowel sound, so ‘an’ is used.
When an abbreviation is spoken as individual letters, use ‘an’ if the first letter has a vowel sound.
Use ‘the’ when the noun is specific and identifiable to both speaker and listener, or when it has been mentioned before.
Use ‘the’ for unique things: things of which there is only one in the world or in context.
Use ‘the’ with superlative adjectives and ordinal numbers.
Use ‘the’ before rivers, oceans, seas, mountain ranges, island groups, deserts and canal names.
Do NOT use ‘the’ before individual mountains, lakes, continents, countries (in most cases) or cities.
Exceptions: the USA, the UK, the Netherlands
Fill in the blanks with the appropriate article: A or An only.

Fill in each blank with a, an, the or Ø. Some sentences have more than one blank.
Answers: Exercise 8
Both 'a' and 'an' are indefinite articles, but the choice between them depends on the sound of the word that follows, not the spelling. Use 'a' before words that begin with a consonant sound: a book, a university (the 'u' sounds like 'yoo'), a uniform. Use 'an' before words that begin with a vowel sound: an apple, an hour (the 'h' is silent), an MBA (the 'M' sounds like 'em'). Completing articles exercises a an the worksheets regularly reinforces this distinction.
The choice is based on sound, not spelling. 'Hour' begins with a silent 'h,' so the first sound is the vowel sound 'ow,' making 'an hour' correct. 'University' begins with the consonant sound 'yoo' (like the word 'you'), making 'a university' correct. This is one of the most commonly tested points in articles exercises a an the worksheets.
Most proper nouns (names of people, most countries, cities, and continents) take no article. However, 'the' is used with rivers (the Ganges), oceans and seas (the Pacific), mountain ranges (the Himalayas), deserts (the Sahara), groups of islands (the Andamans), specific monuments (the Taj Mahal), newspapers (the Times of India), and countries whose names contain a common noun (the United States, the United Kingdom). These rules appear frequently in articles exercises with answers at intermediate and advanced levels.
'A teacher' refers to any teacher, a non-specific person in the teaching profession. 'The teacher' refers to a specific teacher already known to both speaker and listener, or identified by context ('the teacher who took our class yesterday'). This specific vs non-specific distinction is the core of article use and is practised extensively in articles exercises.
