Position Words : Use ‘here’ and ‘there’ for Class 1 English

Use of ‘here’ in a Sentence:

We use the word ‘here’ when we talk about a place where something or someone is located at. Usually, it is a place that is close to the speaker.

In the above example, the boy is pointing at a tree that is near to the place he is standing.

Look at the picture, the boy is pointing at his teacher, who is standing close to him.

Rules We Follow When We Use ‘Here’:

1. We use ‘is’ with ‘here’ when we talk about one person, animal, or object that is close to us.

Example:

In these above examples, we use ‘is’ and ‘here’ because we are talking about one dog, one cousin, and one ball that is near to the girl.

2. We use ‘are’ with ‘here’ when we talk about more than one person, animal, or object near us.

Example:

In these above examples, we use ‘are’ after ‘here’ because we are talking about many animals, people, and books that are close to the girl.

Use of There in a Sentence:

We use ‘there’ when we talk about a place that is far away from the speaker. The speaker will have to walk some distance to reach the object or person.

Example:

In the above example, the boy is showing a cow that is very far from the place he is standing.

In this picture, the boy shows his mother standing at a distance.

Rules we follow when we use ‘here’ & ‘there’:

1. We use ‘is’ with ‘there’ when we talk about one person, animal, or object that is far away from us.

Example:

In these above pictures, we use ‘is’ after ‘there’ because we are referring to one elephant, one doctor, and one bottle that are very far from the girl.

2. We use ‘are’ with ‘there’ when we talk about more than one person, animal, or object that is close to us.
