Seasons and Weather:

Seasons are based on the pattern of changes in the weather conditions, such as temperature, humidity, rain, cold, etc., around the year.

Why do we see different seasons throughout the year?

  • Our Earth revolves around the Sun and also rotates around its own axis.
  • When the Earth is revolving, it remains in a tilted position.
  • The Earth’s tilt and varying distance from the Sun cause changes in weather conditions, which is why we see different seasons.

Four Seasons in India:

  • India is located in the northern hemisphere.
  • We can divide the year into four seasons.
  • Each season lasts for about 3 months.
  • But it varies from place to place. The four seasons are—

1) Summer Season in India:

  • Summer is the hottest season of all.
  • It starts after spring and ends before the monsoon.
  • In India, summer begins in April and ends in June.
  • It is extremely hot in these months, and dry winds blow in some places.
  • During summer, the Earth gets very close to the Sun, which is why the day's length increases.
  • In many places in India, the temperature rises above 40ºC.
  • During summer, the sky remains clear with scanty clouds.
  • All types of waterbodies like ponds, lakes, and rivers become dry in this season.

2) Monsoon:

  • Monsoon is the rainy season. During this season, the wind moves from the ocean to the landmass. This season starts at different times in different places in India.
  • Monsoon starts very early in the south of India as the warm and moist air moves from the ocean to the land. Later it enters the northern part of the country. We can say that the monsoon starts in July and ends in September/ October.
  • During monsoon, we experience the maximum amount of rainfall and see heavy, dark clouds in the sky.
  • Due to heavy and continuous rain, the waterbodies overflow in many places.
  • During this season, we use many umbrellas, boots, and raincoats.
  • Trees and animals get plenty of water after the hot summer.
  • Peacocks dance and display their magnificent feathers when they see dark clouds and lightning in the sky.
  • Sometimes continuous rain causes floods that destroy houses and localities.
  • Monsoon decides the fate of the farmers as rainwater helps the crops to grow well in the fields.

3) Winter in India:

  • Winter is the coldest season of all seasons. It starts after autumn and ends before spring.
  • During winters, the Earth remains far from the Sun, which is why the day's length reduces.
  • As a result, the temperature goes down. In India, winter starts in October and ends in January.
  • Due to the low temperature, we feel cold. During winters, the temperature falls below 0ºC in many places in India.
  • To beat the cold, we wear woollen garments like sweaters, caps, socks, gloves, etc.
  • During winters, snow blizzards occur in many states like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
  • If it snows, people enjoy skiing and skating in outdoors.

4) Spring:

  • Spring is an enjoyable season because the weather remains pleasant throughout this time. Spring starts in February and ends in March.
  • During this time of the year, the Earth moves closer to the Sun.
  • Trees and bushes grow new leaves in spring. Many new plants also grow in this season.
  • Spring is also called the season of flowers because many bloom in this season.
  • During spring, the days and nights are of the same lengths, and the temperature becomes moderate.
  • The sky appears clear and blue with white clouds.
  • Many insects like honeybees and butterflies get very busy in this season; they collect nectars from different flowers.
  • Towards the end of the spring, the days start becoming longer.

New Words:

Tilted: A sloping or slanting position.

Humidity: The amount of water vapour present in the air.

Snow blizzards: A severe snowstorm with strong winds.

Crops: Plants that are grown on a large scale and consumed by us.

Did You Know?

  • The two equal halves of the Earth are called hemispheres.
  • The crops in India are mostly harvested during the monsoons and winters.
  • Autumn is a season that comes between summer and winter. During this season, the temperature gets colder, and the trees start to shed their leaves.
