After several years and months of struggle, hardship, and nonviolent campaigns during the freedom movement, the British parliament finally gave Lord Mountbatten a mandate to transfer power by June 30, 1948. On the other hand, Mountbatten pushed the date back to August 15, 1947. C Rajagopalachari, the first Indian Governor General of independent India, stated that the decision to postpone the day was made because Lord Mountbatten wanted to ensure no bloodshed or rioting.
The process of colonisation started with the arrival of the British East India Company in India in the 1600s. The company initially came to India to trade spices and other commodities but gradually established its political and military power there. By the 1800s, Britain had complete control over India and became a British Empire colony.
Some of the events that take place on Independence Day include flag hoisting ceremonies, parades, fireworks and cultural programmes.
