Music and language share several connections making it inter-related that music helps in language development.
Studies have shown that children exposed to music, whether through listening, singing, or playing instruments, tend to develop stronger language skills. This connection is due to several factors:
Rhythm and Timing: Music helps children understand rhythm and timing, which are essential components of speech. When children listen to music they develop an ability to grasp words thus helping them understand the wording.
Phonemic Awareness: Music activities often involve differences between different sounds, which can improve phonemic awareness. This skill is crucial for learning to read and write, as the children hear the notes of the music.
Vocabulary and Memory: Songs help children learn new words which help in improving their vocabulary. The repetitive listening of the music helps in grasping the words and the children can even learn to sing songs at an early age.
Listening Skills: Engaging with music requires attentive listening, which translates to better listening skills in general. Listening to music can thus help in improving the spoken language of the small children.
It is necessary to understand the details of the music to help get the right choice of music for the children. Music theory provides a framework for understanding the structure and elements of music, such as melody, harmony, and rhythm.
Melody: The sequence of notes that are perceived as a single entity. Melodies can be simple or complex and are often the most recognizable part of a song.
Harmony: The combination of different musical notes played or sung simultaneously. Harmony adds depth and richness to music.
Rhythm: The pattern of sounds and silences in music. Rhythm is fundamental to the structure of music and closely related to the natural rhythms of speech.
Pitch: Pitch is a frequency of sound in which the music is played. There is high pitch and low pitch. Understanding pitch is essential for both singing and playing instrumental music.
Dynamics: The variations in loudness and intensity in music. Dynamics add expressiveness to music, thus making the performance happening.
Tuning: Right tuning of the music is essential to improve the performance of the music. If the tuning goes wrong, then in that case the essence of the music is lost.
