They say true passion has the power to rewrite a person’s life story. For techie Sumalata G, things took a full circle when she left a stable IT job to pursue an academic career. Today, she serves as a coding teacher at Orchids The International School (Bachupally branch) Telangana, spending her days in a room full of energetic students, who are keen to learn coding from her. It wasn’t merely a career switch. Sumalatha considers this a life-changing decision. The innate desire to spend more time with her own children and take up teaching as a profession motivated her to step away from the corporate world and rediscover the magic of coding in a classroom. This ‘beloved coding educator’ is currently busy shaping curious minds with her expertise and warmth.
Making classroom learning more handy in real life
Sumalatha’s decision to make a leap is reflected in the way she imparts knowledge to the little ones. She strives to look beyond traditional learning methods by integrating practical examples into her lessons, showing students how problem-solving skills inspired by coding can be applied to everyday life. “Kids will develop a genuine love for the subject when they are encouraged to ask questions freely. This, in turn, will build confidence turning teaching sessions into an engaging experience. Whatever children learn at school should come in handy in their day-to-day life as well as inform their career choices later,” she elaborates.
Why teachers should stay curious
The same philosophy extends to her own life as well. Sumalatha believes that to be able to truly connect with students on a deeper level, it’s important for her too to stay invested in knowledge. “Teachers are like a second parent to kids. What we inculcate in their minds can have a huge impact on their lives. We should continue to encourage children even when they make mistakes; show them the value of resilience and discipline in achieving success. If we stop learning, we stop growing,” explains the techie-turned-teacher.

Connecting with kids through coding
Sumalatha’s unconventional style of teaching has earned her the coveted Best Teacher Award, in recognition of not only her expertise in teaching but also for actively fostering a bond with students and parents. One moment that stands out for her is when a former student came visiting. “Moments like these remind me that I didn’t make a mistake by choosing this path,” she says, adding, “These students continue to motivate me to do more.” Sumalatha’s story is a shining example of how following one’s passion and nurturing the next generation can create ripples of inspiration beyond the classroom walls.
