Add, Subtract, and Compare Money

  • To add money, add the rupees and the paise separately.
  • Arrange the rupees and paise in columns.
  • Add the paise first.
  • Then add the rupees.

Let us explain it with an example.

Example :

Add Rs 11.25 and Rs 19.50.

Answer:

Rs 11.25 + Rs 19.50

Step 1:

Step 2:

Step 3:

Hence, Rs 11.25 + Rs 19.50 = Rs 30.75

Subtraction of Money

  • To subtract money, subtract the rupees and the paise separately.
  • Arrange the rupees and paise in columns.
  • Subtract the paise first.
  • Then subtract the rupees.

Let us explain it with an example.

Example :

Subtract Rs 43.15 from Rs 72.27.

Answer:

Rs 72.27 – Rs 43.15 =

Step 1:

Step 2:

Step 3:

Hence, Rs 72.27 – Rs 43.15 = Rs 29.12

Comparing Money

  • Comparing money is always between two amounts.
  • When comparing two amounts of money, first identify the higher amount or the lower amount.
  • Generally, ‘less than’ or ‘more than’ is used to compare two amounts.

Let us explain it with an example.

Example :

Look at the below pictures and compare the prices of the fruits given below. Find which one is higher in price and how more it is than the other one. Also, find which one is lower in price and how less it is than the other one.

Answer:

The price of the watermelon is Rs 60 and the price of the pineapple is Rs 78.

So, 78 > 60

The pineapple is higher in price than the watermelon.

Now, Rs 78 – Rs 60 = Rs 18.

So, the price of pineapple is Rs 18 more than the price of the watermelon.

Hence, the price of the pineapple is higher than the price of the watermelon and it is Rs 18 higher than the price of the watermelon.

Similarly, the watermelon is lower in price than the pineapple.

Rs 78 – Rs 60 = Rs 18.

So, the price of watermelon is Rs 18 less than the price of pineapple.

Hence, the watermelon is lower in price and it is Rs 18 lower by the price of the pineapple.

Real-Life Examples

The problems given below are the real-life examples of addition, subtraction, and comparison of money from our daily life.

Example :

1. Rishi has bought a notebook and a pencil box from the shop.

Find out how much he has to give to the shopkeeper.

Answer:

The price of the notebook is Rs 40.50 and the price of the pencil box is Rs 55.25

So, Rs 40.50 + Rs 55.25 = Rs 95.75

Hence, he has to give the shopkeeper Rs 95.75.

2. Manju bought a teddy bear and a doll.

She gives a shopkeeper Rs 200 note. How much will he give back to her?

Answer: The total amount of money she has spent to buy to teddy bear and the doll is

Rs 75 + Rs 57 = Rs 132

Rs 200 – Rs 132 = Rs 68

Hence, the shopkeeper will give back Rs 68 to Manju.
