**Calendar** plays an essential role in daily life. It helps us to plan our daily activities. With the help of the calendar, we can keep the track of the events such as exam, vacation, festivals, etc.

- A calendar can be defined as a chart that represents the days, weeks and months of a specific year.

Now let’s understand the parts of the day.

- A day has 4 major parts:
- Morning
- Afternoon
- Evening
- Night

- There are
**seven**days in a week.

In the below table, the names of the days in a week are given.

- There are 12 months in a year. Each month have 28(or 29days in a leap year), 30 or 31 days.

In the below table, the names of the months in a year are given.

*There are 365 days in a year and 366 days in a leap year.*

**New Learnings:**

Each of the month got it names from ancient Rome. Each name was based on some aspect of Rome culture.

January got it names from the word “Janus” which means the God of new beginnings.

March got it names from the word “Mars” which means the God of war.

April got it names from the word “Aphrodite” which means the Goddess of love and beauty.

May got it names from the word “Maia” which means the Goddess of fertility and growth.

June got it names from the word “Juno” which means the Goddess of love and marriage.

July got it names from the birth month the Roman general “Julius Ceaser”.

August got it names from “Augustus Ceaser” the Roman emperor who was the nephew of Julius Ceaser.

September got it names from the latin word “Septum” which mean seven.

October got it names from the latin word “Octo” which mean eight.

November got it names from the latin word “Novem” which mean night.

December got it names from the latin word “Decem” which mean ten.

**Exceptions:**

The shortest month of the year is “February”. It has 28 days. But in the leap year, february has 29 days.

**Leap Year**

We know that an ordinary year has 365 days in a year. But in a leap year one extra day known as leap day is added to the shortest month February.

- In an ordinary year, February has 28 days and in a leap year February has 29 days.
- To maintain the calendar in alignment with the earth revolution around the sun a leap day is required.
- Therefore, in a leap year there are 366 days which appears in every fourth year.

**How do we know if the year is a leap year?**

To check if the year is the leap year, divide the year by 4. If is completely divisible by 4 then the year is the leap year.

**For example:**

2021 when divided by 4 leaves a remainder 1. Therefore, 2021 was not a leap year.

But 2020 when divided by 4 leaves a remainder 0. Therefore, 2020 was a leap year.

**Exceptions:**

To check if the century year is a leap year, divide the year by 400. If it is divisible by 400 then the year is leap year.

**For example:**

2000 when divided by 400 leaves no remainder. Therefore, 2000 was a leap year.

But 1900 is not divisible by 400. Because when we divide 1900 by 400 it leaves remainder 300. So, 1900 is not divisible by 400.

**Dates**

The calendar helps us to keep the record of the time of the events in the form of dates.

**Look below the format of the dates.**

- DD: It represents the days of the month. It can vary from 01 to 31.
- MM: It represents the months of the year. It can vary from 01 to 12.
- YY: It represents the last two digits of the year.

**For example:**

The 25th December 2022 can be written as **12/ 25/ 22** or **12/25/2022**.

**Number of the days between two dates:**

**Example:**

Suppose today’s date is 01/20/2022 and your friend birthday is on 01/25/2022.

**How many days are left for your friend’s birthday?**

**Solution:**

Today’s date = 01/20/2020

Birthday date = 01/25/2020

The birthday is on the same month. It is observed from the calendar that today is Thursday and the birthday is on Tuesday.

The days between Thursday and Tuesday is “Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday”. Therefore, there are 5 days left for the birthday.

Alternate way: Since the month is the same. Subtract 20 from 25 to get the number of days left.

25 – 20 = 5
