Mental Division Strategies

Let us recall the terms of division.

• The number which is to divided is called the dividend.
• The number by which we divide the dividend is called the divisor.
• The number which we get after dividing is called the quotient.

Division Tricks

1. Division by 10, 100, 1000, etc:

   • Cancel out the common zero from the divisor and the dividend.

   Example 1:

   Divide 2500 by 10

   Divide 5000 by 100

2. Make the divisor as the 10, 100, 1000, etc:

   Multiply the dividend and the divisor by the same number such that the divisor is as 10, 100, 1000, etc.

   Remove the common number of zeros from the dividend and the divisor.

   Example :

   Divide 500 by 25

3. By repeated subtraction:

   Subtract the divisor from the dividend repeatedly until the difference is equal to 0.

   The number of subtractions done is equal to the quotient.

   Example :

   Divide 125 by 25.

4. Split the dividend:

   Step 1: Split the dividend as the sum of two or more factors of the divisor.

   Step 2: Divide each factor by the divisor.

   Step 3: Add all the quotient.

   Example :

   Divide 81 by 3.

5. Split the divisor:

   Step 1: Split the divisor as the product of two or more factors.

   Step 2: Divide the dividend by the factors.

   Example :

   Divide 324 by 12.
