The AIIMS full form in English is "All India Institute of Medical Sciences." AIIMS is a group of autonomous public medical colleges with higher education. AIIMS reflects one of the most prestigious and highly coveted institutions in India. It is a well-renowned institution providing world-class medical education, research, and high-quality health care services. The acronym AIIMS has been internationally accepted as it portrays excellence and commitment in the areas of medical education and patient care.
The history of AIIMS is a tale of vision toward the creation of an institution of excellence in medical education, research, and patient care in India. The idea originated way back in 1946, when a committee appointed under the chairmanship of Sir Joseph Bhore made a recommendation to further the idea regarding the establishment of an institution in India for medical education which would match the highest standards of medical education globally. The objective was to create professionals in the form of competent doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals who could contribute to the goal of meeting the healthcare needs of the country.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences was instituted as a body corporate by an Act of Parliament in 1956, followed by the establishment of the first AIIMS in New Delhi. Essentially, AIIMS was an organization conceptualized as part of the plan of the Central Government that aimed to provide a fillip to better health facilities and medical education in India. It was envisioned as a place where medical education, research, and patient care worked in coordination so that a model was established to replicate across the country.
AIIMS New Delhi was the pioneer amongst a group of subsequent AIIMS institutions that were set up across different parts of the country. With time and rising demand for quality institutions, AIIMS also expanded to various other cities, including Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur, Rishikesh, among many others. Every AIIMS is an autonomous institution with an independent governing body, but all have the same objective of ensuring high standards in medical education and healthcare.
The AIIMS model has performed magic here, procreating not only some of the best doctors in the country but also medical research and innovations. AIIMS has played the role of being a pioneer of medical research in India and has contributed much to the creation of new treatments, technologies, and healthcare policies for the nation. Its research output is of great repute nationally and internationally, making AIIMS one of the prime entity members of the global medical fraternity.
