Descriptive Writing : Concept - Paragraph Writing

Definition :

• A paragraph explains a particular idea in detail.
• The length of the paragraph can be different depending on the topic it describes.

Paragraph on the topic ‘Christmas a Festival’

Christmas is a festival that celebrates the birth of Jesus. Christmas is a festival of joy and happiness. People enjoy visiting each other during this season. People decorate the Christmas tree and give each other gifts. Christmas is celebrated all over the world.

The Layout of the Paragraph

1. Topic Sentence

The first part of a paragraph is the topic sentence. Most of the time the first sentence in a paragraph is referred to as the topic sentence. It expressed what the paragraph is all about. The rest of the sentences in the paragraph should match the topic sentence.

      2. Supporting Details

The supporting sentences give us more detail about the topic sentence by stating some supporting information example related to topic. It is mainly the explanation part of the topic.

      3. Concluding Sentence

The concluding sentence is the final sentence in a paragraph. It sums the main topic in a single line. In the concluding sentence, the main concept is usually repeated as a summary.

Examples:

 

Topic Sentence: My name is Neha.

Supporting Details: I stay with my parents, and my younger brother lives in Kochi, Kerala. My father is a teacher, and my mother is a housewife. My parents spend a lot of time with me and my brother.

Concluding Sentence: We are a small and happy family.

How to Write a Paragraph?

• Remember, the paragraph have to be on a single topic.
• The first line has to be a topic sentence that talks about the main idea of the topic.
• Mention supporting sentences that has more ​details or write examples related to the topic.
• Lastly, mention the concluding sentence, which will complete the main topic for the last time.

Common Mistake

Always write the paragraphs in the proper order. Don’t jumble up the order of writing the paragraph. First should be the topic sentence, then supporting details, and lastly a concluding sentence.
