What Are Simple, Compound, and Complex Sentences?

Simple sentences consist of a single independent clause. They contain a subject and a verb, and convey a complete thought.

Example: She likes coffee.

Compound sentences are made up of two main clauses of the same importance, joined by a conjunction.

Example: She likes coffee, and he likes tea.

Complex sentences consist of one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses.
