The Meteorological Department of India recognises four seasons in India. These are named as summer, winter, spring and autumn. India is a country with diverse geography, including mountains, deserts, valleys and coastal regions, located in the northern hemisphere. The year here is divided mainly into four seasons, and each season in India lasts for about three months. Although the duration of each season may vary depending on the different places. Let’s explore each of these seasons and their unique features.
Summer in India usually starts from April and ends in June. This time is usually hot and dry with an average temperature between 30°C and 45°C. The sky remains clear, and the sun shines brightly, causing rivers, ponds, and lakes to dry. The central and northern parts of India are hotter than the rest of the country. This season is famous for mango production across the country, which is also the national fruit of India. Many schools and educational institutions give a summer break of about two months for kids to rest at home during the hot weather. It is also the time when families plan lots of vacations and have fun together. After the scorching heat of the sun, the monsoons arrive, which provide some relief. They usually last for two months, from July to September. Some parts of the country receive more rain than others based on their geography.
After the rains, autumn begins with cooler winds and moderate temperatures. The weather is not too hot or cold, but it's dry with trees shedding their leaves and the surroundings looking less green. This is the season of famous festivals celebrated with great enthusiasm in our country. The preparation and celebration of these festivals make autumn the most joyful and colorful time of the year. Navratri, Diwali, Dussehra, and Ganesh Chaturthi are some of the famous festivals celebrated across the country that come during the autumn season in India.
Winter in India starts from October and lasts till January or February. The average temperature drops to a minimum of 5° to 15°C and is usually cold and dry. Some hill stations and mountains receive heavy rainfall during the winter in India. Many local and international tourists visit these hill stations in winter to witness the snowfall. Some regions at higher altitudes in the northern part of India experience extreme winters, while others experience a mild temperature drop. Cold winds, fog, and smog are quite common in most northern states like Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Delhi during winters in India. Lohri and Makar Sankranti are some of the famous winter festivals celebrated during this season.
The spring season in India starts after winter. February to April is spring in our country. Spring in India is indeed the most beautiful season, with flowers blooming and trees turning greener. The weather is perfectly mild for planning family picnics in the parks as the sky remains clear and appears more blue, with many insects like honeybees and butterflies collecting nectar from colourful flowers. Both day and night are of the same duration during the spring season.
The nights are shorter in winter as the earth is tilted away from the sun during that season.
The average temperature drop in India during winters is a minimum of 5° to 15°C.
May and June are the hottest months in India.
