Recycling refers to the process of converting used material into new products. There are different types of materials that can be recycled instead of discarding them as landfills. Material such as aluminum, cardboard steel, glass, paper, e-waste and batteries can be recycled and used for creating new products.
The main purpose of the recycling process is to save resources by reducing waste and its environmental impact. Recycling also protects our environment from contamination caused due to manufacturing of new products. Different stages of recycling are explained step by step below:
Collecting: The first step in recycling is waste collection. Waste products are gathered from various sources such as homes, offices, businesses and schools by various modes such as recycle bins, waste management centers and services.
Sorting: The waste is then segregated into different categories for cleaning and processing using different methods. For example, paper waste is sorted by removing impurities before turning it into fiber which is a raw material for new products. Similarly glass and other types of materials are segregated, cleaned and prepared for processing.
Processing: Different processes are used to convert the waste products into raw material for new products. Such as, plastic is chopped into chips and cleaned before extruding into moulding plates.
Based on the process used for recycling, we can classify it into following four categories:

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle: To minimize the waste production, we must reduce the amount of waste, reuse the products that can be reused and recycle the ones that cannot be reused.
