The Four Types of Gender

The following four gender categories can be applied to English nouns:

  1. The gender that designates male nouns, like boy or king, is known as the masculine gender.Male gender

  2. The term "feminine gender" refers to the names of organisms that are female, such as "queen" or "girl.

    Female gender

  3. Common Gender encompasses both men and women, such as teachers and doctors.  teachers  
  4. Things without life, like tables and books, are said regarded as having a neutral gender.

  2. Genderless Words Some nouns referring to a profession, either a teacher, or a writer are a common gender in English; this means that they refer equally to both female & male respectively.

  1. Adding (ess) for Feminine Many feminine words are formed by adding the suffix (ess) to the masculine word. Thus, actor → actress.
