How to Write IX in Roman Numerals?

To write 9 in Roman numerals, we break it into its simplest form:

  • Step 1: Break the number 9  into the least expanded form.

  • Step 2:  9 can be written as 10 – 1.

  • Step 3: In Roman numerals, 9 = 10 – 1 = X – 1, as  10 is X and 1 is I.

  • When a smaller number comes before a larger number, we subtract.

  • Therefore, IX in Roman numerals is 9.

Rules to Write Roman Numerals

The Roman numeral system is based on seven basic symbols: I for 1, V for 5, X for 10, L for 50, C for 100, D for 500, and M for 1000. A numeral can be repeated up to three times to increase its value, such as III for 3 or XXX for 30, but the symbols V, L, and D are never repeated. When a smaller numeral is written after a larger numeral, their values are added; for example, VI equals 6 and XV equals 15.

On the other hand, when a smaller numeral is placed before a larger one, it is subtracted, such as IV for 4, IX for 9, XL for 40, and CM for 900. Only I, X, and C are used in this subtraction rule, and they cannot be subtracted from numerals more than ten times larger (for instance, I cannot be subtracted from L or C). Roman numerals are generally written in descending order from left to right, like MCCXX for 1220 or DCCLXV for 765. Finally, the Roman numeral system does not include a symbol for zero or for negative numbers.
