What is Pictograph?

  • A picture graph is a method to represent data using relevant images/symbols.
  • A picture graph is the simplest way to represent data.
  • In a picture graph, we use keys that define the values of the images/symbol.
  • All symbols should be of the same size in a picture graph.
  • There should be a title of the Picture graph.

The image below is an example of a picture graph that represents the data of students absent in class 2 this week.

 

Pictograph in Maths

  • The title of a picture graph tells us about the data.
  • Observe the categories and the data related to the categories.
  • Key represents the value of each symbol/image.

Here it is explained with an example.

Example :

The picture graph is about the favorite colors of 20 students

i) How many students like red as their favorite color?

ii) How many students like blue as their favorite color?

iii) How many students like black as their favorite color?

iv) How many students like brown as their favorite color?

v) How many more students like red than black?

Answer:

The number of students who like the red color is 6.

The number of students who like the blue color is 4.

The number of students who like the color black is 2.

The number of students who like the color brown is 4.

Also, it can be found from the picture graph, that how many students like red more than black.

The number of students who like the red color is 6.

The number of students who like the color black is 2.

6 – 2 = 4

Hence, two students love red color more than black color.

 

Advantages of Pictograph

  • Picture graphs are used to express information in the simplest manner. It is used universally.
  • It is easy to read as all the information is provided in one place.
  • It doesn’t require much explanation, as it is universally used.
  • It is very attractive.

 

Disadvantages of Pictograph

  • Picture graph is not useful for larger data, especially when the numbers are in hundreds, thousands or more.
  • A Picture graph is used for only the data in whole numbers.
  • Picture graph is not an accurate way to represent data.
