NCERT EVS Class 4 Chapter 14 – Basva’s Farm

Class 4 EVS Chapter 14 presents the basic concepts of farming and the steps involved in crop cultivation through Basva’s narration. Basva is a farmer residing in Belvanika village in Karnataka. CBSE Class 4 EVS Chapter 14 also discusses the different implements required for agricultural practices.

Question 1 :

 In Basva’s area an implement called Khunti is used to loosen the soil. What is this kind of implement called in your area? Draw it and discuss.

Answer :

The implement we use to loosen soil is also called khunti in our area.

Given above is the picture of a khunti. My father uses the same implement in our garden to loosen the soil before seeding the flowering plants.

Find out from a farmer or some elders in your family, what kinds of crops are grown in your area.

Answer :

Answer :

One way to plough the fields instead of animals is by using a tractor. They provide power for different farming activities.

I have seen the wheat crop being cultivated in the fields near my ancestral home.

Why is Basva not able to attend school for some days?

Answer :

Basva has to help his father in the fields, which is why he cannot attend school for some days.


Question 3 :

Are there any fields near your house? What is grown there?

Answer :

 Yes, there is a field near my ancestral house where wheat is grown.

Basva’s Appa takes the onions to the market in a truck. Think, how would fruits and vegetables be taken to another place, if there were no proper roads.

Answer :

Carrying fruits and vegetables to another place would be difficult if there were no proper roads. Earlier, people used bullock-carts, push- carts, and donkeys to carry their crops from one place to another place.

The steps involved in the cultivation of wheat are given below—
(a) Preparation of soil: The soil must be properly prepared before the seeds are sowed.
(b) Seeding: Wheat seeds are readily available in the market. While purchasing the seeds, we have to make sure that it is of good quality, high yielding, and disease-free.
(c) Sowing the seeds: The wheat seeds have to be sown about 4 to 5 cm inside the soil.
(d) Harvesting: The process of harvesting starts when the leaves and stem turn yellow and become fairly dry.
